macobserver.com — Community Unit School District 300 in Illinois is working to remove Mac computers from classrooms in favor of more "appropriate technology." The district's new director of technology, Eric Willard, claims the move will help students because "most people use Microsoft programs in the real world."

@JeffH"Not only do they cost more...but the remote admin tools that 90% of school districts in America use today (stuff like Novell's products) aren't avaliable for Mac OS X, so they would NEED to put Windows on those Macs, driving the costs through the roof."Apple Remote Desktop - check it out: http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/...good stuff. ; )Works just fine on Windows machines too. Now I utilize this and MS SMS, etc...all in a combination form, but ARD is very powerful and actually has a better feature-set (for the most part)...especially in terms of a learning curve/programming.

"The combination of Windows plus open source software, he said, will prevent students from downloading music and movies to the computers."I don't see why that checks out...?

@Ericular: What about support costs? Do you do a cost analysis on lost productivity? You should. Unless your sole concern is to protect IT jobs in the school district you should be factoring in TCO and not just purchase price.

This is actually my school district. Few facts. it's the 3rd largest district in Illinois, and the high schools SUCK. Check out the district 300 test scores. But hey they did just approve a nice fat tax increase. And are building more schools.

We'll see how appropriate it is when some spyware spreads across the network and starts popping up porn ads in front of all the little kiddies!
