freshome.com— Hurray for mad science! The Haier WasH20 is a detergent-less washing machine, and this new washing machine has a very innovative way to wash your clothes !

This is unacceptable and should be stopped. The detergent companies will not stand for this! Bush has already passed legislation to block this machine!
I agree, this is gonna be like OPEC and the Major Auto Manufactures trying to drown out the idea of the hydrogen car by making a bunch of hybrid cars, and the sad thing is it is working. More people are buying hybrids now then ever before, in turn the oil companies get to keep charging high and the auto companies don't have to deal with redesigning how the cars work and abiding by new regulations. The same thing will happen on a smaller scale with the washing machine manufacturers and the detergent companies, they are gonna drive out new innovation by coming up with a catchy new product to push on the consumer. In fact they already have and I can attest to that as I actually own a whirlpool washer that uses less detergent and less water, they use the term "HE" on both the bottle of detergent and on the machine to let you know which one you have to buy. Its marketing, monopoly and corporate corruption at its worst.
hmmm, odd. And yet the photo shows the standard detergent 'drawers' that are on the existing models above the door on the right and left hand sides. The question is, if the machine really does produce it's own detergent, why spend the extra dollars to add detergent drawers, and all of the associated plumbing and control circuitry to the machine? I am in favor of options, but redundancy in my washer is not something I am willing to pay extra for.

I know a very large detergent company that built a washing machine like this back in the 70's. They promptly destroyed it.

These wash balls do the same - http://ecowashballs.blogspot.com/ and they cost like 20 bucks. I mean, they say they do the same, I'm a bit skeptic...
