thinkprogress.org — A new study by Indiana University media researchers finds that Fox News host Bill O’Reilly calls “a person or a group a derogatory name once every 6.8 seconds, on average, or nearly nine times every minute during the editorials that open his program each night.”

The problem with entertainers and commentators like O'Reilly and Franken alike is that too many people rely on these buttholes to provide their opinions for them. They are both ideologues and both tend to be bigoted. Since we live in what is now a two-income household society, few of us in the working world have the time to watch C-SPAN, read the WSJ, attend state, local or municipal board meetings, be members of our local PTA, read Foreign Affairs and The Economist, and really educate ourselves on both sides of the issues. By and large people tune out anything that doesn't jive with their world view. But ideologues take it one step further - they demonize the other side and tell people "Go ahead and pat yourself on the back for being bigoted and having a closed mind. Let me do the thinking for you." Hitler was a master of this. Stalin and Lenin practically wrote the book. Bush, on the other hand, sucks as a charismatic cult of personality, so that's why he lets pundits do the dirty work and look like fools/Coulters. My main objection is that news outlets, and Fox is the BIGGEST offender by far, imply that there is an association between this infotainment crap and true journalism. Friction and bigotry should not be paraded on national "news" channels.Major thumbs up for the submitter. Now find an article critical of Franken, to be fair./neoliberal

Let him say what he wants. If you don't like it move to another channel/station. TV and radio rely on advertising for money. If too many people look else where, there go the advertising dollars and there goes the show. People are way to sensitive. jeez. Lately all I seem to here is WAAHHHHHH.

“Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.” John Stuart Mill quote (English exponent of Utilitarianism, ethical theorist, Philosopher, Economist and Logician. 1806-1873)

@razor:Oh please, if you can't see how abusive liberals have become in thier politics, then you are blind. Thier hatred is almost pathological. You own response included an attempt at an insult. Thats ok, I expect it these days from liberals responding to me. Thats fine.

"Conservatives" today are liberals by the standards of Mill's day.

I don't have a problem with anyone espousing their political views -- as long as they present their views in a civil and intelligent manner that stimulates debate and talk. I don't care if you're a conservative or a liberal, when someone resorts to name-calling and fear mongering and plays on base emotions rather than reasoned arguments, I have no time for them.

I was curious what kind of names O'Reilly called people 8.88 times a minute. I couldn't find a complete listing in the study, but here is a sampling of what they mentioned:Buried headline,Anti-American voices,Our pal, death tax,un-American,good guysI also found it humorous that the first two notes used as reference for the story were from www.oreilly-sucks.com and www.sweetjesusihatebilloreilly.com

He's a complete loon. Does anybody really take him seriously? I find his show hilarious because he is so ridiculous.
