The two sides were locked in negotiations over the weekend trying to hammer out a final agreement with an eye toward going public with the merger today in Washington, D.C., where XM is based...

A merger? I think this would be a bad idea. What made the companies do so well was the fact that they were in competition. What will happen after they've merged?

@diggtechi4lifecompetition helps keep prices down. with only one satellite provider they can charge whatever they want, and people will pay if they want satellite. perhaps my estimate was an exaggeration.i used to pay 29 a month for my cell phone, as a cingular before att customer. when i re-rewed my cingular contract the least expensive plan i could get was 39.99. (for the same service!!)everyone thinks that company merges will help the customer, when in the end it just hurts them. the FCC is suppose to be on top of things like this, to keep competition fair.

Sorry.. you will not be getting both Sirius and XM services. The plan calls for keeping the services separate pretty much as they are now, Sirius & XM.. just the company will be merged. (Reducing over head and of course price competition).. Antitrust isn't the only concern.. (this isn't a 'free enterprise' issue.. these are publicly owned and controlled airwaves and what happens on them is a concern to everyone.) There are also issues like when these first 2 licenses were made available.. that a law was passed that clearly stated that satellite radio could not buy each other out or merge (guess they will convince the FCC that the law doesn't apply to them (the only 2 companies there are)).... The biggest justification for the merger is the fact they are both losing billions of dollars a year... while they brag about paying their people the biggest money around .. Howard (bless his heart) the best example.. but don't pay someone like him like 100 times what he is worth.. and then come complaining you are losing billions of dollars...
