space.com — SETI Queen Jill Tarter explains it all for you..."To understand this conclusion, it’s necessary to appreciate that there is a fundamental asymmetry in our current situation: we are a hundred-year-old technology in a ten-billion-year-old galaxy...

ZOOOOOOOMMMMMM..... Wha? What the f**k was that?!?Oh, just the conversation going WAY over my head. I am constantly amazed at the breadth of knowledge right here in our little Digg universe! If anyone wants to know how to ride a unicycle on mountain bike trails or build a porch I can help with that.

Only the ones that we are looking for. Any pre-industrial civilization wouldn't be found using SETI's present technology. I have never heard one person assume that all ETIs would be more advanced than us. Though those that want to believe that Humans are the only intelligent life form in the Universe do lie that people actually said that. Of course, these "humans are the top of the Universal food chain" losers are proof that we Humans aren't really all that intelligent yet.

All I have to say is those guys should better donate their cycles to Folding@Home or some other worthy cause (before you give me crappy comments - I've donated many CPU-months (dual-core CPU months, at that!) to medical distributed computing and I'm still doing it). In all likelihood, they'll never find anything, and also in all likelihood, there _is_ intelligent life in the universe. Each of these likelihoods is a good reason by itself not to waste resources on this crap - they should either help with immediate causes (diseases and such) or do more for space flight technologies. Intragalactic MSN Messenger, even if existed, would be soo boring.

"SETI: What If Everybody Is Listening And Nobody Is Transmitting?"Then we'll just offset all of the energy savings congress bestowed upon us by extending daylight saving. Keeps the universe in balance. I know my company sure had fun spending a lot of time, energy, and money these past 2-3 months updating all of our systems to recognize the new start and end dates.Besides, if we're transmitting the message that extending daylight saving won't do a damn thing to save energy and congress, on our own continent no less, is not receiving the message, then why would we be so bold as to think SETI would be any different?

I've always found it interesting how creationists prefer to take on Darwin and biology rather than other sciences, such as astronomy. It seems to me like astronomy with its description of the size and age of the universe offers a far more devastating case against creationism and man's "privileged" place in the universe than does the theory of evolution. Of course, we do see some attempts to attack geology (the "Grand Canyon was created in the Great Flood" theory), but to my knowledge the creationists have not confronted astronomy (other than some potshots at the Big Bang Theory) yet.

Would advanced civilisations, knowing that extinction events happen rather often, and a tech savvy society might only be a brief 1000 years long before the dark ages come round again.Engineer a nearby Star into a Pulsar as a monument to themselves to be seen long after they have gone.At least another ETI in the future will see that they were THERE briefly. The Universe could be full of beacons to long dead civilisations.

Don't overvalue our civilization. We may have screwed up our planet but nothing of this have influenced anything outside the Earth, we still need thousands of years to gain the capability to screw our solar system, we're still infantile. To put it on perspective if such a super advanced alien civilization exists and can take a peek at us we would be as close to an intergalactic cancer as an earthworm destroying an ant nest, we're still insignificant in the grander scheme of things....
