worthplaying.com — A few days ago Sony's TGS 06 keynote speech revealed that the PS3 would be compatible with games on the MegaDrive/Genesis. Oddly enough SEGA Japan has issues a short statement clarifying that such claims are not correct at this point, that the option is merely being considered, and is currently "under examination." Did somebody speak too soon?

so this guy's blog actually confirms what kutagari said... in the keynote he said that the ps3 COULD (not will) possibly playback genesis games etc... the guy's blog said that sega said that its still under consideration....

It's funny, but I seem to have a history of arguing over the way digg works in the comments more than arguing the validity of the story itself. Frankly the "story" itself is more of a blurb than anything else. During the rabid reporting that goes on during events like TGS or E3 there are so many quotes flying about from so many sources and being reported in so many places that there are obviously going to be some examples of confusion and conflicting information. So at any rate, to quote the story itself:"...SEGA Japan has issued a short statement clarifying that such claims are not correct at this point..."So if we are going to walk on pins and needles here, then the title of the story IS correct in that Sega says the Sony statement was wrong. Right now. Maybe, possibly, quite PROBABLY, yes...Sony will get the rights to the old Genesis games and make them available for the PS3, but at the time of the statement, Sony's claims were untrue, just as the title of the story suggests. Was the submitter trying to flame Sony? Maybe, but does it matter though? It seems to me the opinions we submit, be they through comments or by digging or by submitting stories themselves are what put the social in the social bookmarking/news/whatever buzzword we want to use this week for these types of websites. I just don't see the point in constantly taking the time to attack other users because you don't agree with what is essentially the opinion of someone somewhere that doesn't actually effect you. Maybe I'd feel differently if it weren't so common in the comments section for people to try to one-up each other. Or maybe I should just start disregarding the comments altogether and just read the stories and close the tabs. I try to be sociable though, so here I am.And for the record I did not digg this "story." At all. It's stoopid. So there.

Okay, last reply by me in this thread, then I'll leave it alone.First off, "denies PS3's [...] backwards compatibility" more strongly implies that it does -not- have it over a simple "maybe". It's a common tactic in spin to reduce a statement to a yes/no, yet inaccurate, statement. It works because a refuter (spelling? it's 3am) can't say it's -entirely- false nor can they suggest the "kind of" side edgewise. And does it matter? Sure it does. The gaming section has gone from "Oh hey, this is an interesting story" to "Why is this crap on the front page?". Compare here to the Tech or Science pages, and you'll see the difference in quality.

Yeah, last post by me as well. An interesting debate that could go on for days, but getting back to the reason I originally replied, you wondered why you got buried, I gave you you an answer. It's fine for you to have your opinion and it's fine for me to have mine, but with this setup, people have the collective power to democratically lift up or squash said opinion. If your opinion is stated in a hostile manner, there's a good chance other users will bury you, especially if those same users with that power are the ones who your statement is attacking. (Or at least if that's how they feel). It's just the nature of digg I suppose. We as users can control the content, but not the space we're using to control said content. As long as Rose and Co keep digg evolving the way they have thus far, we can't expect it to stay the same forever. That's just good old fashioned sentimentality and the more popular the site gets, the less microcosmic it's going to be. And right now, ripping Sony to pieces is pretty effing popular, so saying ANYTHING that could be construed as supporting them as opposed to, say, Sega, might get you buried as well. Thanks for the debate though, Cal.

Actually, most sega fans moved to the gamecube after DC died. Look at the sales of early sega GC titles.

What Sony meant to say was that Megadrive/Genesis games will be backwards compatible with the WII

I thought the train of lies and deception from Sony to their quickly dwindling fanbase was over! Keep that train a-rollin Ken! Werd!

Consider definitions of lying. Changing specs of a product before it is released? False inflammatory articles and quotes taken out of context? Yeah, Sony never claimed it will have the emulated games just that there was a possibility. Sega didn't "deny" sony's claim only making sure that the media understood that nothing was finalized.

The only slot is where sony is gonna stick it to ya with $75 games
