pic1.funtigo.com — These are just fantastic: "Many people have heard a sonic boom, but few have seen one. When an airplane travels at a speed faster than sound, density waves of sound emitted by the plane cannot precede the plane, and so accumulate in a cone behind the plane."

"SEE A Sonic Boom: 50 Amazing Photos Of Aircraft Breaking Wind" That would have been a much more interesting headline.

Well, they're not supposed to break the sound barrier...but, one time a Blue Angels pilot, Capt. Vince Donile, at an air show in Kelowna B. C., hustling to get back into position, punched it through the sound barrier accidentally ...lotta broken glass in the city that day...back in the late 50s and early 60s, military aircraft used to break the sound barrier all the time over cities (but high enough to not do any damage). As a kid I used to enjoy to BOOM sound when it happened.

i work on an AF base, last time i heard a sonic boom it scared the s**t out of me, thought a meteor fell on the building or something. its pretty cool.but if a pilot does one on accident he will get suspended

I lived in Traverse City for the past 21 years (just moved), my parents still live there. The blue angels fly directly over our farm when they are beginning their runs across the bay. I have even seen them wave at me. Not sure where you get the statement ... "The angels used to come to my home town of Traverse City, MI nearly every summer (until they decided all of the sudden that the wind conditions were too dangerous to perform there)." ... they still do come, it's always been every second year for the 4th of July. One year I saw one go so low that the jet exhaust hit the water and made it vaporize when the pilot pulled up. However they never even come close to reaching the speed of sound. They are very loud and they fly very low, but they don't hit the speed of sound in their demonstrations. They only have a few miles to turn and maneuver. Many of the pics just have vapor cones caused by the low pressure zones behind the flight surfaces.
