I dunno, doodle. Of course the sudden economic elimination of the U.S would throw things horribly off-kilter for a while - but so would the removal of any other 1st-world country. There would be a major schism in the markets, a brief "musical chairs"-style reorganization of infrastructure, and the world would move on.America is important, to be sure, but that's because we created a worldwide economy with ourselves at the center. We make up the rules as we go, so of course we seem like the most powerful player - everyone's playing -our- game.

@ doodlebummThe front page story in the economist this week (October 21st to 27th) on pages 79 to 81 can be summarized by saying "Any slowdown in America's economy can now be offset bt the growing and largely unrecognized power of Asia's consumers."Its actually quite an interesting read. Here's a link: http://economist.com/opinion/displayStory.cfm?Story_ID=E1_RDVSVSV
