A quote from Thud's link"...her election is going to lead to the cure for Parkinson disease via stem cell research because her opponent, Jim Talent, opposes it, which is not true. He may oppose embryonic stem cell research, does not oppose adult stem cell research or even cord blood, I don't believe, research, umbilical cord research. "The crux of the argument is weather you believe that using human embryos for this research is equivalent to murder for the sake of saving someone else. How can we say that embryos are not human yet when they contain full human DNA. Yes we understand the possibilities of using embryonic stem cells, but so far Adult stem cells have been more productive in tests and there is no issue about using unborn people or cloning for these means.Have a look at some of these Google results for examples of what I mean.http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=adult+stem+cell+success
I agree, he either intentionally didn't take his medication, or he's just exaggerating for the video. The last Pope had Parkinson's, when did you see him swaying like Ray Charles?
@techweenieStop trying to explain something you know nothing about. We are all, essentially, Liberals in the definition of the term. However, at the beginning of the move to democracy there was a shift in the way the word has been used. You enjoy being free in your country? Do you enjoy the right to vote and your other rights guaranteed in your Constitution? Liberalism, buddy. Enjoy. We Canadians have parties that are similar to American Republicans and Democrats. But seeing as we have more than just two parties, our political spectrum has shifted. The Liberal Party, in Canada sits firmly in the middle (possibly a little more to the left). The Conservatives are right wing, though they have much more progressive policies. We used to have the Canadian Alliance party which was a bunch of Canadian (read: Albertan) hillbilly bible wavers that attempted to take over the capital. To the very far left we have the New Democrats which is the most socialist political party in Canada (probably North America, though I'm not sure about Mexican politics). If you believe that American democrats are 'far left', you've likely never heard of Tommy Douglas. The NDP, in your mind, are probably Communists. Socialists whom established Medicare in Canada - the system where you can walk into a hospital emergency room, get treated and walk out without having to sign over the deed to your home. They've also established incredible social equity programs, campaigned for same-sex marriage, and have phenomenal environmental practices. Oh noes!!1!shiftone! It's everything you've ever feared! Now that I've cleared up any confusion for you, perhaps you can pull your head out of your ass so that you can soak up some intelligence along the way.You believe Mr. Fox to be insincere? Why?Is he pushing his own agenda for a sympathy vote? Hardly. He's representing Americans whom have to cope with Parkinson's disease. It is a lot easier to gain momentum when you have a famous face helping your cause. Mr. Fox can use his fame to send out a farther reaching message than any other American with the disease possibly could. He is a figurehead of the people and a way for Americans to relate with the disease. If anything, he is doing something noble - he's trying to help as many people as he possibly can.I suppose though, trying to make the world a better place is the liberal agenda we're trying so very hard to undo.
You have nothing to worry about. His fans are the ones who still believe that dinosaurs were planted by some mighty being in the sky to test our faith. Oh - and that blowing up abortion clinics is justified.
Anyone interested in the issue being debated in Missouri can read the text of the proposed Amendment 2 here:http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/2006petitions/ppStemCell.aspThe text is just under 2,000 words in length and (at least for me) the language is quite accessible. Just remember a "blastocyst" is the technical term for an early-stage embryo.Opponents of Amendment 2 are spewing misinformation. For instance, in an ad featuring Kurt Warner and other celebrities, St. Louis Cardinal's pitcher Jeff Suppan says "Amendment 2 claims it bans human cloning, but in the 2,000 words you won't read, it makes cloning a constitutional right. Don't be deceived." What 2,000 words is he saying we won't read? There is no hidden text, just the 2,000 words of the proposed amendment. Read it. See for yourself that the amendment will in fact prohibit human cloning while ensuring the continued legality of other forms of cloning. [N.B.: after his team won the World Series last night, Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds described his team as a "bunch of idiots".] In the same commercial, by a bogus analogy to a California state proposition of a few years ago, Kurt Warner suggests the amendment will cost Missouri residents billions of dollars and that we should not "be tricked". In fact, as you can read for yourself, the proposed amendment does not have *any* state funding attached or implied. Furthermore, biomedical research in Missouri is almost entirely funded, not through state taxes, but by Federal grants which directly benefit the state. If researchers in Missouri don't compete for and win those grant dollars, some other state will. (If you are from another state, remember that increased competition ultimately benefits everyone, no matter what happens in your particular locality). Contrary to Warner's implication, Amendment 2 is nothing like the budgetary legislation enacted in California. Warner also says California researchers say there won't be any cures for at least 15 years. What he doesn't say is that, after only 8 years of research in somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), promising results have already been obtained in mouse models of Parkinson's disease. It might take another 15 years to conduct sufficient testing in humans and obtain FDA approval. If we sit on our hands by killing Amendment 2, we can help extend the suffering of debilitating diseases and injuries. In the ad, acress Patricia Heaton says "Low income women will be seduced by big checks. And extracting donor eggs is an extremely complicated, dangerous and painful procedure." Read the text of the proposed amendment: it only allows an inconvenience fee to be paid to donors. This is similar to men being compensated for donating semen, but the compensation for women is usually higher because of the greater inconvenience. However, extracting donor eggs is not complicated, dangerous or painful. In the same ad, Mike Sweeney says, "25 women have died and 6,000 have complained of complications. Missouri, don't be fooled." Note that Sweeney doesn't say the 25 women died from egg donation. No, that would have been a lie, because there are NO documented fatalities from egg donation. "Complications" could be as benign as missing a period or a heavy period, but of course Sweeney doesn't even say these women experienced complications from egg donation. The complications might have arisen from a totally unrelated procedure, such as having a PAP smear. Kurt Warner then asks, "Why does it cost $28 million to convince Missourians that an amendment is good for them? Maybe because it's not." Or maybe because it is expensive to educate the lay person as to the facts and importance of this issue, to raise the public's awareness out of the Dark Ages, and to cut through the misinformation and terror being spread by opponents of all forms of cloning.Senator Jim Talent, who is running for re-election in Missouri, says in one of his campaign ads that he is "against human cloning" and that the proposed Amendment 2 "would make cloning legal". Note his implication that Amendment 2 would make human cloning illegal. He does not actually say the amendment would make human cloning legal, because that would actually be contrary to the facts. Amendment 2 explicitly prohibits human cloning, but Talent intentionally implies it will make human cloning legal. In case you're wondering why it is necessary to make such legislation an amendment, prior fundamentalist efforts in Missouri have attempted to prohibit cloning of all types, including therapeutic cloning. As a result, Missouri institutions have already lost excellent researchers to other states where the socio-political environment does not threaten their work. Without such legislation, Missouri residents will later lose out on the benefits of cloning because they will have to leave their state for treatment.
Rush Limbaugh is a piece of s**t. I love Michael A Fox. Why would he fake a disease that is as tragic and threatening of his own life? So i say... f**k YOU Rush
Absolutley right. And they call us the 'bleeding heart liberals' -at least we HAVE a heart, bleeding or not! I think it's so unfortunate that people in their position could use their power and voice to actually do some good in this country. People like them send this country 200 years in the past!
How does he get away with the s**t he says and does? I can't stand him. As a person in recovery, I try to be compassionate and understanding to all. However, as someone whom has shown that they, too, suffer from addiction problems, he has done absolutley the opposite of the suggested 'steps' in recovery. Bet he bailed on rehab and just used that (going) as a way to beat the charges against him. Total hypocrite and I hope that it bites him in the ass! He acts as if he's still using... wouldn't be surprised and hope that it catches up to him. Wouldn't you love to see his high -and- mighty- ass go to prison for drugs? Where he could be surrounded by all the people that he loathes?News flash, Rush, most people loathe you MORE!
