A portable based on the original XBox seems like a snooze-fest because everyone has moved on. A portable based on the current XBox 360 would be a difficult feat of engineering, considering it uses the same CPU that Apple recently ditched (in favor of Intel CPUs) because it consumes too much power and produces too much heat for portables. A portable based on an entirely new architecture would mean it's not really a "portable XBox" because it would need all new games. Maybe it is a new portable "in the XBox family," much like the DS is in the Nintendo family, but cannot be considered a "portable Game Cube."Now there was recent news about "XBox Live Anywhere" (search Digg for it), which is a sort of cellphone integration with the XBox 360 (you can get notified of game patches and tell your XBox to download them, you can get notified when someone in your MMORPG clan achieves some big goal, etc.), but it is hardly a portable XBox.
I think we're going to see future portable consoles start coming with inbuilt hard drives.Think about it, they're including them in mobile phones and they're predominant with mp3 players. The next logical step is a hard drive in your next generation DS/Gameboy where you install the game. Perhaps the thing has a optical drive like the PSP where you can install all of the game complete with FMV to the inbuilt hdd.The small hard drives in ipods etc have massively better energy efficiency than using your games with an inbuilt optical drive. While cartridges are currently where it's at for battery life there is a massive limit because of the costs involved with solid state storage.
If Microsoft implements Live strongly on the portable and uses a few key games to market it such as halo they could possibly manage to compete with the DS. Microsoft needs to wait til the next psp launches and come late into the competition so that they can see what they are up against. They will also need to implement superb controls like they did on the 360 and price it in the 200-250 range and I could see success.
The hard drive Idea is pretty good, but with advances in technology that are sure to come before that step is taken, it makes much more sense to use flash memory. Storage is increasing and with news that the Ipod Nano might be bumped up to 10GB, it's entirely possible to have that or more for a portable gaming system.
