timesonline.co.uk — LONG suffering parents of adolescents might not agree, but scientists claim that listening to rock music can boost your brain power. Researchers at a Scottish university believe that contrary to received wisdom, children who listen to loud rock or pop music while swotting for exams are probably improving their chances of success.

This study is always going around or being rehashed. It's fairly obvious that if it does anything at all, any music a person LIKES has a positive effect on their "brain power".Even then the effect would be through "g-ing some one up" if you get my meaning. Good music gets the adrenalin flowing a bit, makes you happy etc. The same would happen in babies and small children as it does with adults. They like a good tune.

The Mozart effect is a name for many things. One of them is that babies are smarter if they listen to Mozart. That's not true. But in adults, some skills are better, but the effect lasts only 10 minutes. This whole thing is just a big misinterpretation of some stuff, so it might not have any effect at all.

You know, there's a 'bury as innacurate' option up there. This is the kind of story it was made for.

rap "music"?
eggcupSep 5, 2006
Hi MadEscapist...Not really...It was a Pilot Study...Also, it was electroencephalographic (EEG) and analyzed specific event related brain potentials (ERPs)..so, very time consuming. Nonetheless, it general terms you are quite right, 16 can be considered small. However, in this case the 16 were not 'fans', as reported in the Media, but very busy highly trained professional musicians from several Orchestras (see Eggcup, above). This study looked at the effect of music exposure on the brains of musicians. It seems, therefore, that the findings cannot, despite what the newspapres say, be generalised across the whole population.

I wonder what would happen to the brain if you listened to rap instead of rock, man i think youd be bulletproof!

Wow! That info would help me and my best friend, since we are both rock music listeners. :)
