netwavzradio.com — Now, I think it's safe to say that we all know the deffinition of rock music. But lately, these days it gets harder to tell. The other day I was in the car and listening to the radio. The station was supposed to be all-rock music. When they announced that the next song was La La by Ashlee Simpson I was literally floored. WTF?

Far be it from me to disagree just for the sake of disagreement, but on this one I will have to throw the proverbial B.S. flag on the field. "Ashlee Nicolle Simpson (born October 3, 1984) is an American pop rock singer- songwriter, and occasional actress". NOTE the term pop rock singer. This doesn't mean that she is sponsored by a crackly but sweet candy that explodes in your mouth. I would like to take you on a journey back in time to when Rock 'N Roll first entered into the mainstream of American culture. Performers like Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were considered to be the forefathers of Rock 'N Roll. However, their music was nothing more than a slightly modified version of what was then referred to as 'Black Music'. Albeit 'Black Music' is the root of what we listen consider Rock 'N Roll music today, I would offer to you that this is not a debate on what is or what is not the foundation based on your personal opinion. Rather, just consider that Rock 'N Roll was and always has been an evolutionary process from the very beginning and from the first time that the swiveled-hipped sensation or the pounding of piano keys with the feet entered into the mainstream of American, it did so with the vehicle of chart success. What I am attempting to illustrate is that if it were not for the critical acclaim of Billboard's ranking based on record sales and radio play, Rock 'N Roll would never have survived. Instead, we may all be enjoying the evolutionary process of polka. I thank whatever Higher Source in the universe that binds all things together this is not our reality. Rock 'N Roll only survived in it's infancy and prospered because it was (follow me on this....) POP-ular. Hence the term Pop Rock (POP-ular ROCK 'n roll). From Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello... Jerry Lee to Amy Lee... or the Beach Boys to the Backstreet Boys - Popular Rock music continues to change and it does so based on what is the popular opinion of the majority and not the few who simply don't like it.I would simply offer up the suggestion that before one takes a stab at Rock 'N Roll, research things a bit and try to find out WHY Ashlee Simpson, Madonna, or even N'Sync might be considered 'rock' instead of forming your own opinion as to why they are not. This is only my opinion and I have been wrong before.
