This has been around for a while. Carnegie Mellon University researchers developed one similar in the year 2000 named Pearl. Here's the article:http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~flo/press/globe_3_01/index.html(Since it's an old article, I don't think the pictures work too well, but you get the general idea.)It's funny, because CMU develops a lot of stuff, but never really gets recognized for it: MRI's, TartanTurf, the roots of Apple's Unix based OS, etc.
I think the article sounds like the robots will be doing those things a human nurse would probably not want to do. Like cleaning and taking temperature. These scientists are not dumb. They know well enough that no robots are going to replace human when it comes to the human touch department.. :-) If I am a nurse, I would welcome the idea of "Robots doing all the crap work that I don't want to do".
seems to me that these robots will be more like janitors than nurses.FTA "The mechanised "angels" - being developed by EU-funded scientists - will perform basic tasks such as mopping up spillages, taking messages and guiding visitors to hospital beds."The article then goes on to talk about how they COULD distribute medications, etc, etc....I don't know how many people will be willing on signing off to have a robotic nurse though. I'm sure this is actually welcome by nurses, my girlfriend is a nurse, and she enjoys the interaction with patients and being in charge of distributing medications, but there's a lot of crap work she has to do that could probably be replaced by these robo-nurses.
I love the comments on that site, it shows how ignorant people can be. Become a nurse is no easy feat and most of the comments left are calling them idiots when they have no clue what is actually required of a nurse.
Robos for sick and old people are the future. Especially in west europe will they become very important because there will be too many old people here. Think of the costs! Even if they can't do everything nurses can do, they will be able to perfom a lot of tasks. They won't replace nurses.

This thing is more like a robot medical assistant not a nurse.
