eastbayexpress.com — The black parents wanted an explanation. Doctors, lawyers, judges, and insurance brokers, many had come to the upscale Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights specifically because of its stellar school district. They expected their children to succeed academically, but most were performing poorly. African-American students were lagging far behind their

Nope, as the article points out. No racism involved... and that was what they looked for pre-Ogbu's study.Glad you decided to read before making a knee-jerk diggaction.

@dcshinderly"Grow the f**k up."Really.There are people on here who aren't making distinctions about what they are talking about. Also, so called "losers" do not get a free pass in this society, unless you're talking about the millions of people on welfare. Because affirmative action is not about giving preference to under-qualified people--if you believe that then you don't know what affirmative action is, and this isn't the place to try to explain it. And to discount that there are people who work hard and try to achieve excellence are being turned away everyday because of skin color or any other prejudice is being naive.I never said or meant to imply that anyone was referring to me specifially, but I am not going to just sit here and watch racist comments get dugg up and not say anything about it. I do agree with you that the real fight is with culture and socio-economics. The thing is that many people associate skin color with culture. Yeah, Negro is just a word. That doesn't make it any less offensive. Thanks for noticing the chip on my shoulder. Many people tend to miss it especially when they say things like "Some of my best friends are black." or "I'm not a racist, but..." or "Racism doesn't exist." or "Get over it. Slavery went away with the Emancipation Proclaimation." I'm done with this comment thread.

you calling a black person who is educated is racist? what? That sentence just doesn't make sense, you're missing a word or something... Anyway, if you're indeed black, why do you identify a "black culture"? I didn't know that every race has their very own culture, and everybody who has that certain skin color is part of the culture. That's such a misused term.

dcshirley... oh god when I said I was done with you earlier... I still am, but I have to comment to that dumb s**t you just said. You're an embarrassment. And mich... I agree with everyword you say btw. There really is no BLACK culture. There's no WHITE culture. They're misused terms.

I'm not sure if you're really an angry black who believes in victomhood, or if you're a really really funny white guy pretending to be a really angry black who believes in victimhood. Either way, you're making me laugh.

Hmmmm. Still no one offers up the REAL reason why black kids are flunking. It's not the school system, the teachers, the principals, the superindendants, the parents, the textbooks, the internet, video games, etc. None of these are to blame. Can you guess what is?
(Hint: it's the kids)
