computerworld.com — Internet Explorer 8 has shipped in its final version and is ready to take on its rivals. This latest version of Microsoft's browser leapfrogs its closest competition, Firefox 3, for basic browsing and productivity features -- it has better tab handling, a niftier search bar, a more useful address bar, and new tools that deliver information...

hey idiot, IE8 passes more tests in the W3C CSS2.1 test suite than ANY other browser on the market

I second that, once it works properly in FF or a webkit browser, 9.9 times out of 10 it will work properly in other browsers.. and fairly close on IE browsers. IE8 looks to be another improvement, so I'm happy

I've been extensively using and exclusively on IE8 since it's been released and although the new features are good, it came of as pretty unstable. For instance, Facebook kept crashing on me, and every time IE8 tried to revive the tab, it would crash again. Had to close the whole window for it to come out of that loop. Searching alternate providers is still not as intutive as Opera. In Opera, if I had to search Amazon, I'd just go F8 > a searchterm. (or g for google, etc) Here in IE8, I'd have to do multiple mouse-clicks or tab-arrow-space combos. Adding new search providers in Opera is as simple as right clicking on a search field. Google Chrome has gone a step ahead and done away with the search feild altogether. Most browsers have also implemented a 'Speed Dial' like feature. Firefox has profile management while Opera has session management. IE8 has only just implemented restoring last closed tabs. Worse still, reopening closed tabs or recovering from a crash means loosing all form filled data, while yet again, other browsers have implemented this. We're not blindly 'ripping on IE8'. The point is, IE (and MS in general) has always been playing catchup - these features have been in alternate browsers since many years. Or consider Hotmail, who've only just introduced POP3 when other providers have had IMAP since years now. :)The main reason why we're 'ripping on IE8' is that Microsoft, with the kind of money and power they have, could do a way, way better job, considering that small time companies like Opera Software ASA have often exceeded expectations when it comes to innovations. The one positive thing they've done with IE8 is adhering to web standards a bit more than before, so ignorant webdevs might now be forced to make their sites more standards compliant. Hopefully, IE8 could finally mark the beginning of the end of users b1tching about "Oh, but xyz website doesn't work properly in abc browser!".

You didn't notice the myriad of new, wait, crap... I didn't see a single thing on that list I haven't been able to do for years using Firefox with add-ons. And before anyone can say, but yeah, this way you don't have to search through add-ons. Maybe I really don't want some of those features, this makes IE bloated and Firefox still superior.

I dunno what your running, but a new tab opens in IE8 just as fast if not faster than FF, and only slightly slower than on chrome. If I click and count, I can't even get to 1 before it's open.

Oh Come on! That was funny! Someone digg me up. It's been 3 days since this article was posted, so probably no one is reading this anymore. Although I would be interested in seeing a comment from someone who is reading this 3 day old article -- how you stumbled across it, etc..? I'll check back in a couple of days to see if someone responded, as an experiment.
