Another reason the government apposes cannabis and other psychoactives alike, is that is stimulates alternative thought about our environment. Rather than accepting things for the way the are, the inner explorer finds exploits in the laws of society and discusses them. This is detrimental to the established system. Can't have your cattle figuring out how to get outside the fence now can you?
@dbrodbeckI enjoyed your previous comment on addiction but I have to call you out on this one. Smoking is not actually the most effective way to "use" marijuana. Cooking marijuana into food, around a gram per person, can get up to 4x as high in comparison. This is why at mostly all cannabis clubs(medicinal marijuana stores) in CA, they sell and promote mostly marijuana laced food products. Smoking however, does more quickly effect the user, where as consuming can take up to an hour to feel effects.
Well a reinforcement based model of 'addiction' (hate that word, implies a loss of control and a disease) fits with such ideas. Behaviour that you get reinforced for happens more often. This reinforcement happens when the nucleus accumbens the ventral tegmental area and the medial forebrain bundle's dopaminergic system are activated. So when you have an orgasm, eat a good meal, get a story promoted on digg or take Heroin, your mesolimbic dopamine system gets activacted. Many psychoactive drugs operate on this system, at least those that show a liking reaction, THC included. So yeah I understand how drug taking behaviour works. Can you provide a peer reviewed cite about this one in five statistic?
Crack and cocaine are not 'physically addictive' either, but many people have a hard time kicking that.I was dependant for awhile on pot, and coke... and to be honest I had a harder time quitting weed than coke. But in the end, neither one was as hard to quit as I anticipated it would be... I don't even crave either one...
