mtv.com— Ryan Shneider of Insomniac Games claims that his game could only be capable of being played on the PS3. He also claims that it can only be held on Blu-Ray. Are DVDs going out of style quicker than we think?

This is probably half bad coding and half trying to assure consumers only the platform they're developing for will be "good enough to play their games."
I am sure that you are going to see a whole bunch of monstrously huge games on PS3 in a vain attempt to prove a point. The Sony faithful will believe, and everybody else will laugh at them. My guess is that these games will either be a TON of pre-rendered cut scenes, or just filler that does nothing but take up space. This way you won't have to take the load time hit for the larger size files at the slower transfer speed. Also don't kid yourself. BD is substantially slower than 12X DVD. In fact, only about 10% of the DVD is has a slower transfer speed, and there is technology out there to help minimize the amount of times this portion is accessed. As was stated before, more space IS good. More space at the cost of substantially slower data transfer speeds is not good.
nope:"Blu-ray requires a much lower rotation speed of the disc to reach the specified transfer rate of 36Mbps. A constant rotation speed of 10.000 RPM, which is the current upper limit for optical drives, will result in 12x BD but only 9x HD-DVD. This means that a HD-DVD must rotate faster to reach the same transfer rates."
Blu-ray is supported on the hardware side by Hitachi, LG, Matsus**ta (Panasonic), Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, HP, Dell, Apple, TDK, and Thomson (Note: Thomson also supports HD-DVD). On the software side, Blu-ray is supported by Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios, MGM, Paramount (also supports HD-DVD) and Warner (also supports HD-DVD). Apple Computer has also announced support for Blu-ray.
Wow.You are right. DVD MOVIES are not HD. The 360 will output 720P or 1080i just fine. The only thing that it up-scales is DVD movies (over VGA). The problem is that the amount of space on a DVD is not what keeps it from being HD. It's just the player. Don't believe me? Go check out the Special edition of T2 which came with an HD version of the movie. On DVD. Currently the 360 plays HD content just fine off its hard drive or from your PC. No special player needed. But I wasn't talking about movies. This has NOTHING to do with Blu-Ray transfer speed or HD gaming. In fact PC games have been running at HD resolution or greater off of DVDs for quite some time now. No matter how hard you try and how many times you dig me down you can't make 2X BD faster than 12X DVD. The BD is just going to transfer data slower. I even looked into it a little, and that small portion (less than 10%) of the DVD that is slightly smaller doesn't even need to be used. A normal part of the mastering process can be to push the data to the outer portions of the disk. Even if it is used, the average speed for the 12X DVD is higher. In fact you have to go almost to 3X BD before it is even on average.I never said that Sony invented BD. It was part of a group, and it is one of its more active proponents.
well if you done your "research" you would know the transfer rate is 36MB/sec for the basic player. Specifications of BD Capacity 23.3/25/27GB (single layer) Data transfer rate 36Mbps Recording method Phase change Signal modulation 1-7PP Data track Groove recording Addressing method Wobble Visual data MPEG-2 video Audio data AC3、MPEG-1- Layer2、Others AV multiplex method MPEG-2 Transport StreamOne other key point of BD is the Wobble:"The address format is the wobble type, which has meandering grooves. By simultaneously applying two types of modulation, an extremely high reliability has been achieved. Similarly to the data error correction method, BD also has a built-in function for a stable operation"Now it might not say s**t to you but for those who do it means allot. But the main reason why BD is better is the blue/red laser, it reads all formats (except hd dvd) so people claiming Sony is pushing BD is bull you can still buy your DVD's. It also has a Random Access High-speed Playback Function and they can also shorten the response as much as possible from the time the disc is inserted until recording/playing back becomes ready, files other than Clip AV stream files are stored closely in certain area on the disc.and the 360 12x DVD9 speed makes allot of noise and takes way more energy, and it makes the system/disk unstable (LAG!/POP-UP). Slower speed means less noise and more stability less energy but this is only possible when you use a blue laser. All in all this means Sony needs a smaller power brick to drive the BD player then the far less superior DVD player.the developers will have to take advantage of the capability's of BD to show you what it does, now since this is all damn new this will take a while, but I'm not worry for when you've seen the pre-dev.kit PS3 MGS demo's you might expect Kojima to take full advantage of the power of the BD-Disk alone, it's not just Cell it's the Combo that gives it it's power and the online beehive Cell power as shown in the cancer research demo will bring online players "supercomputer" power. But as I said it's up to the lazy developers thats why Sony bought them, just to make sure.
yea, and the extra ram used for this uncompressed data is so much more effectively utilized than if it were compressed to half the size and just a fraction of the "omnipotent" cell processor was used to compensate.

When did size start to matter in video games??

So I'm A Sony whore... hmm well I like to think I'm just a good investor. putting money on a MS product is never a good investment in my book.

Even if the software isn't great it doesn't change the fact that even without it, DVD is a lot faster than BD on average.
