iht.com — As Hollywood digs in for a second week of a strike, the screenwriters might want to send a few angry picketers over to Will Smith's place. Or Steven Spielberg's. And maybe the studio executives should think about joining them on the line. As it turns out, the pot of money that the producers and writers are fighting over...

This is, without a doubt, the most feeble analysis about movie profitability I have ever seen. Most movies end up making money, due to over seas sales, pay-per-view (hotel and home), DVD sales and rentals, and TV airings. These revenue streams can last decades (Gone with the Wind anyone?).

I can tell you for certain that a 0% royalty is bad for writer and good for the distributor. What percentages are the writers asking for? Read for yourself.http://www.wga.org/contract_07/proposalsfull2.pdf

You're missing the point. FTA: "a Hanks, Cruise or Carrey whose movie brings $600 million back to the studio from all sources might easily wind up with a $20 million salary, and an additional $50 million on the back end, while an A-list director and producer could take in tens of millions more." This is just the studios manufacturing bulls**t to dissuade people from backing the writers on their strike. They know if the public gets behind the writers and boycotts then they are liable to default on their loans for their horribly overpriced mansions. If we all think it is the actors and directors making the big bucks and the studios can't even break even then the writers just seem like douche bags, never mind that only one movie ever actually grossed the 600 million quoted. http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross (disclaimer: US box office only; worldwide not much better though:)

Honestly, do people think that the movie business operates in a vacuum, violating the laws of the market place? No, thats why I think they make money. If they didn't they wouldn't exist.

Well, if you really think that most movies make money, then you know where to invest your money. It's a sure thing, right? So what are you waiting for?

It seems that you've missed my point. My point wasn't in the interaction between the user and the medium but in the hesitancy to engage in an activity due to the possiblity of an unfortunate outcome. For instance, in posting this message I take the risk of people digging me down but do so because of the possibility that people will understand what I am trying to say and digg me up.
