And Democrats never say anything dumb, right? Both parties are responsible for some seriously stupid statements. This partisan politics is garbage, they both suck!
silastomorrowJun 30, 2010
Exactly. They have us rooting them on like sports teams.
vegetablelambJun 30, 2010
If America wanted differently it wouldn't be so.
ericschc1Jun 30, 2010
@VegetableLamb: Exactly. I'm getting a little tired of the American people acting like the government has the market cornered on stupidity and how many American people think/act/speak as though they shouldn't even attempt to adhere to the standards they expect of their government. In a democracy, even one as flawed as ours is, you get the government you deserve.

Until the money and lobbyists are removed from politics, we will always be screwed.
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
Surely they do both suck hardcore, but the Republicans are like the Yankees of stupid statements and the Democrats are like the White Sox because the Republicans are often attempting to appeal to their constituencies that they actually have high contempt for, so they say things like, "look, I'm a stupid f**king slob who can't read a book, just like you! YOU ARE AWESOME! Vote for me!"
And, as a result of this bulls**t the occasional actually retarded politician who doesn't realize it's all bulls**t gets into office because the public can't tell the difference between the good ol' boy act and a genuine redneck.
The democrats aren't so much known for their stupidity as their absolute spinelessness and obsession with "playing the game" instead of actually, you know, doing their f**king jobs. Also, they're much less unified than the republicans and as a result spend most of their time in-fighting over dumb bulls**t.
picaloJun 30, 2010
you're insane, both are part of big brother, stop comparing and start preparing.

I agree. All 57 states have democrats that never say anything dumb.
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
apackofmonkeys, really?
Let me clarify this sentence for you, "The Democrats aren't so much known for their stupidity" means "Democrats say stupid s**t, too, but it's not their calling card. Characteristic Democrat behavior is rallying to get subsidies for corn ethanol instead of the much more efficient sugar ethanol because your state grows more corn and the corn lobby buys you dinner a lot."
The Democrats aren't the ones who are publicly unsure about evolution's validity over creationism. That level of stupid is monopolized by the GOP.
ftx437Jun 30, 2010
Thwart. The problem with you statement is this. When a republican says something stupid, it's all over the news, web etc. But when a dem say something stupid, they all try to hide it under the rug like it never was said at all.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

ftx437, so the media never covers what democrats say? You might have a case if Fox News werent around, but it is and it's the most popular 24 hour news network on tv. So your point about lack of coverage kind of completely falls apart there.
picaloJun 30, 2010
@ftx437
know whats funny? (your right) is that the same thing happens with apple OS vs windows discussions...even though they are the same and essentially get the same job done (yes windows is more powerful) but they do the exact same thing...
they are both bad in that right, however, if a mac product (ex: iphone 4 and the ipad issues) craps out, its sweapt under the rug, versus a windows messup its basically their head on a chopping block in the middle of the town square.
republicans and dems ARE EXACTLY the same.
they both want control. period.
but i wouldnt be suprised if the same apple fanboys are the same ones digging these down and not saying a word when a "dem" messes up...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The difference is that, while Democrats may say stupid things from time to time, the Republicans on the whole tend to say their comments with such vitriol and hate. And their comments are frequently so laughable - such as the Limbaugh quote from the video - and yet said with so much conviction that it's really difficult to take them seriously on other matters too.
Combine that with the Republican stonewalling and the "I can get away with what I preach against" mentality* and the rest of us pretty much feel like Republican politicians in general are a liability to this country.
* See George Lakoff's 'Don't Think Like an Elephant!'.
curunirJun 30, 2010
You really think so? Want to see some real vitriol and hate, try googling "teabaggers".
homerrJun 30, 2010
I agree about teabaggers, but they tend to be more of an outgrowth of the Republican rhetoric - as in the teabaggers are the ones that believe the garbage that Republican politicians say. Further, few Republican politicians have ever denounced the teabaggers or say that they go too far.

It's so f**king sad. I talked to both my uncle and my mother in law last week (Southeastern PA, 1.5 hrs from Bethlehem, PA)....I happened to mention some guys shirt "If you aren't Anti-Abortion, you aren't Christian." It was pretty ironic that both had the same views on the same issues....both Republicans:
My uncle thinks Obama is a Muslim and a Socialist and my mother-in-law says that he (a socialist) and congress are out to destroy American and strip us of the 2nd amendment - Reid and Pelosi take more civil liberties away from us than we have ever ever seen before, trying to stop Tea Party movements, etc. Both say that our country is destroyed and this "socialist agenda" is destroying us. My jaw dropped when she said that she thinks that Palin is as sharp as a tack. I gave up after we started arguing over the specifics, eg, that polls showed that Americans wanted/opposed health care reform and the fact that Palin is a f**king idiot. And her yammering about her being a "Constitutional scholar" and therefore 100% correct...ignoring "The Patriot Act", waterboarding, etc, etc. and her complete lack of memory regarding her love of Glen Beck.
2nd Amendment? Civil Liberties? Socialism? Muslim? President Palin? FEAR! WTF!!!!!
Republicans are great at organizing the masses Fox, Palin, Limbaugh, etc, etc - organizing the Dems is like herding cats...I would like to think that it is because the Dems don't just accept the propaganda as easily, but who knows anymore. Can't we just disband these bulls**t political parties?
American politics and it's broken governmental and healthcare systems. =(
It makes me nauseous to think that greed, lobbing, one-sided issues, corruption, and ignorance is so entrenched in government and political parties everywhere in the world that it can never be destroyed =(

“To protect our babies, we need to shake them harder!”
“We are mocked for the baldness that is our uninsured, and the only way to avoid that mockery are the hair plugs that is the new healthcare bill!”
“I think that was a very good first one hundred days for a black man.”
"Look, John's last-minute economic plan does nothing to tackle the number one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S."
(To a man in a wheelchair) "Uh, uh, Chuck Graham, state senator, is here. Stand up, Chuck, let ‘em see you. Oh, God love you. What am I talking about."

Some of those aren't that dumb, they're just poorly worded. Some are fine, but if you read them trying to find stupidity, you can.
Also, some names attached to the quotes would be nice.
Your last one, for example.
"If John McCain wants to know where the bad guys live, come back with me to Afghanistan. We know where they reside, and it's not in Iraq."
He/she's just saying that, in their opinion, the real "bad guys" are in Afghanistan and not Iraq. What's wrong with that? I agree with that sentiment.
A lot of the quotes you put up are just poor wording and I think there's a crucial difference between poor wording and a truly stupid idea. Most "Bushisms" were just terrible wording like, "put food on your family". We know what he was trying to say and the idea itself isn't stupid or offensive. However, an idea that even when explained and clarified is never more than just completely retarded is different and I think that's what was being expressed in the video compilation.
In the video compilation there are several quotes where leaders are openly expressing disdain for poor people, comparing them to animals that "breed when fed". I mean, that's not poor wording. That's genuine malice. They also express a complete lack of understanding about the world. One woman was talking about paying the doctors with chickens or odd jobs instead of doing healthcare reform. That's not poor word choice, that's poor thought choice.
Then there's Limbaugh talking about how Obama wants to make everyone in America poor so he can employ his grand communist master plan for world domination. Limbaugh is very well spoken and he picks his words carefully, it's the ideas he presents which are very, very stupid.
I have to reiterate, there's a big difference between a slip of the tongue and a genuinely stupid idea.
boozedrinkerJun 30, 2010
Hence the reason it's called "stupid". If it weren't worded incorrectly, it wouldn't be stupid. f**king picky?
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
Boozedrinker, if you don't understand the difference between poor word choice and poor thought choice, then there's nothing I can do for you.
We've all misspoken, the smartest person on the planet will occasionally misspeak. It's the thoughts behind the words that carry the weight of meaning.

lormendiJun 30, 2010
Yeah, it sounds pretty dumb if you're dumb enough to think he wasn't using a metaphor.
vbullingerJun 30, 2010
Jeeeeesus, you're dumb.
Metaphor?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
He literally says that he's worried that there would be too many people on the island and that it might capsize. How is that a metaphor? Explain that one to me, Shakespeare. How is that a metaphor?!?
He honestly thinks that islands float on the water. Explain that one away, @Lormendi, and walk me through this made up metaphor. I'm waiting...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
moderndaydarwinJun 30, 2010
You greatly over estimate the number of American's that know what a metaphor is.
exergenJun 30, 2010
lol at metaphor
I haven't heard it spun that way yet - you leftists are sure creative!
lormendiJun 30, 2010
OK, do you REALLY think that he honestly thought a f**king island would tip over and capsize? Really? It was a stupid remark said in 'serious jest.' I know it's a lot more fun to pretend he was being serious, but seriously.... I know he might not be an Einstein, but do you really, truly think he thought an island could actually capsize? Nobody is that f**king stupid.
lormendiJun 30, 2010
Seems Republicans have a hard time understand a dry sense of humor. Must be that well-documented deformed frontal lobe problem.

delphium226Jun 30, 2010
Lol @ repugs getting confused by a metaphor. Not in the least bit surprised though.
lormendiJun 30, 2010
I've done my share of opiates. It doesn't lend a person to think that islands can actually tip over. People on painkillers don't suddenly lose touch with the basics of geology.
"I wasn't suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over," he said. . Johnson said he was "using a metaphor" to describe how adding more military personnel to the tiny island "could be a tipping point which could adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and could overburden its stressed infrastructure."
lormendiJun 30, 2010
This is a revelation to me. I assumed that people were making s**t of him for cracking dumb jokes. I didn't realize that there were people who actually thought he was serious......wow........just wow.
osr3vJun 30, 2010
lormendi, they truly think that Obama is a terrorist born outside of the U.S., that evolution isn't real, that the Republican party is conservative, etc. How can it suprise you that the same people don't get a metaphor?
jhorraJun 30, 2010
Please, explain to me the metaphor.

Republicans don't understand irony, especially the use of metaphor.

Scientific fact.

Johnson said he was "using a metaphor" to describe how adding more military personnel to the tiny island "could be a tipping point which could adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and could overburden its stressed infrastructure."
I heard the whole statement months ago. In no way, shape or form could it have been construed as a metaphor.
Hank Johnson just said this to cover his ass. He specifically talked about it tipping over and capsizing. He wasn't talking about the "fragile ecosystem," etc. The guy answering the question had to answer it multiple times in a very clear fashion to Mr. Johnson. It was not a metaphor or a joke: this guy is just that dumb.

I wouldn't put it past democrats to be that dumb.
vbullingerJul 1, 2010
I wouldn't put it past any politician to be that dumb, but I decided I'd do the research, as it is common for me to do.
I still have yet to hear an explanation of the "metaphor," but I did watch a video where Hank said he was joking that that's his kind of joke. He didn't seem nervous and it didn't look like he was lying.
I watched the video again, reeeeeeal close. When he suggests that it might capsize, look at his mouth very carefully. It looks like there might be the slightest hint of a smile for a second.
As for now, I'm not 100% convinced that he wasn't joking. If he was, that's a funny joke, but he should seriously consider not making those kinds of jokes in that kind of venue and wasting everyone's time.
lormendiJun 30, 2010

Look, I don't give a s**t about the guy one way or another. And, I admit it was funny. But never did I actually think he seriously thought it would literally capsize.
exergenJun 30, 2010
lol - worst backpedal ever
lormendiJun 30, 2010
So, in your tiny little brain, it went down like this?
Guy seriously thought an island could tip over if you put too many people on it.
Guy goes home, wife tells him that he is full of fail.
Guy issues a press release after looking up islands on the internet, and finding out he was in fact, full of fail?
Would you be trying to float the idea that he was being serious if he was NOT a Democrat? You get points for honesty.

If you can watch this, and honestly believe his explanation that he was using a metaphor, you are as wacked out as he is.
Generally, a metaphor used in such a ridiculous way is followed by some kind of expression of humor on the part of the person supplying it. At least in the real world anyways.
lormendiJun 30, 2010
Yeah, it seems as clear to me than as it does now. he has a dry sense of humor.
kingp43Jul 1, 2010
a dry sense of humor, are you serious? This guy is not a damn comedian or some talk show host! He is a Representative for Georgia's 4th District. If there was any chance in Guam that he was making jokes, I feel there is no place for that horse s**t in Congress.

There's nothing stupid about it, if you happened to live on a small island it would be pretty funny... It's not uncommon for someone to point out that a fat chick sitting down near them could tip the whole island, or remarks like that. You're just a mainlander so you have trouble understanding islander jokes.
What he said was obviously not to be taken seriously, but it's easy to get what he means.. It just doesn't dawn on you because you live on such a large land mass that the idea of someone joking about an island flipping over is unfathomable to you even though it's actually not that rare of a joke, it's kind of a no brainer.
hermitninjaJul 1, 2010
ya because hank johnson's sense of humor is either a) relative to his experience on an island (he hails from Georgia) or b) so nuanced and in your face he should be a f**king comedian. Puhhhlease. He goes crazy because his liver is ravaged by hepatitis C. I love how there are people actually coming to his defense to say he's a brilliant satirist. Anything he says, he always has to run damage control on later. It's both sad and hilarious at the same time because what he says is so outlandish and a product of a f**ked up disease. The idea that this was meant to be construed as a metaphor is also laughable.
lormendiJul 1, 2010
Who the f**k is saying he's a brilliant satirist? Answer: nobody.
Do you honestly believe that he really thought an island could tip over? Do you?
hermitninjaJul 1, 2010
@Lormendi - *WHOOSH*
boombyeJul 5, 2010
Perhaps he served before and was stationed in Guam moron. I'm not saying it's a great joke, just that it's something people have said before whenever they live in a populated small island or have been to one. I don't know what his Hepatitis C affecting his liver has to do with him making such a statement because it's one of those things I have heard before in relation to a small island.
Don't be saying "whoosh" to Lormendi when you're the one trying to paint him as this brilliant comedian when all I'm saying is that he's messing around, not that it's some profound awesome joke, it's just something people say that have been to or lived on populated small islands.

Here's the actual quote- since, somehow, I doubt you've ever actually read it: "Over the last fifteen months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states, I think — one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii I was not allowed to go to … my staff could not justify it."
If you can't see that he meant to say 47, then I'm afraid there's just no helping you. There's someone saying stupid stuff in your post, and it's not Obama.

malexJun 30, 2010
"Seriously, that's your argument? He just flubbed his words?"
Yes. He flubbed his words.
It's a embarrassing gaff, to be sure, but ask yourself if you honestly believe that Barack Obama was unfamiliar with the number of states in the union.
wasabibombJun 30, 2010
@drmangrum: "You can't suddenly justify one flub while damning others."
The hell I can't. You're comparing years of "nukular" to ONE INSTANCE of saying a 5 instead of a 4. You're not even trying anymore, are you?
Again, are you honestly trying to say that Obama thought there are 60 states in the US? Answer the question... or run away from the thread. Whichever's easiest for you.

Is there anyone who actually thinks 57 states wasn't a joke?
13point1Jun 30, 2010
Nah, it's not a joke. It's him trying to say two things at once.
We always say "the 50 states." It's sort of reflexive. He meant to say "47 states," but also tried to say "50 states" at the same time because we always talk about all 50 states. The two combined and came out as "57 states." It's obvious he doesn't actually think that there are more than 50 states; his brain and mouth just weren't quite going at the same speed at that moment. Happens to all of us.
uselesstriviaJun 30, 2010
You're as big a moron as the people in this video if you think there's a fair comparison between a guy misspeaking and saying 57 instead of 47 and a group of republican activists and even some elected officials calling a US Senator a terrorist.
There are retarded and ridiculous things said on both sides of the isle...but there's a difference between saying something dumb and calling someone a terrorist.
If you speak in front of a camera long enough you'll get caught saying something stupid...but if you're a decent human being you'll never be caught accusing a person of being a terrorist for political gain when you know objectively that it isn't true.
quarterbrewJun 30, 2010

uselesstriviaJun 30, 2010
The difference is that Joe Biden only says stuff that may be considered impolite (saying "stand up" to a guy in a wheelchair), politically inopportune (the comments about hillary clinton) or somewhat boneheaded (the indian americans at 7-11 gaffe)....but he doesn't scream at the top of his lungs that Dick Cheney is a Nazi sympathizer.
gguillornJun 30, 2010
Biden is like a golden retriever that constantly bumps into the furniture. He certainly doesn't act like a proper VP, but he just cracks me up. He just says stupid things all the time with a certain genuine air about him, like he doesn't realize where he is or why he's important.
malexJun 30, 2010
You have a point, Gguillorn. Biden does have some significant political skills, but being an articulate speaker isn't among them.

I don't know the context of what she was talking about, but it seems like she's calling for a second amendment remedy to congressional incompetence, implying she thinks people ought to shoot Harry Reid. Which is clearly insane and wildly inappropriate. I just think Biden's gaffes are funny, that doesn't mean I am some sort of extremist who thinks we should assassinate politicians.

Obama isn't perfect as a president, but no one can call him stupid. Period. On the other hand the guy who's making this whole case for why poor children should starve to death can be called on being a backwards dumb f**k all day long, because that's what he is.

The White House that cant fart in the oval bathroom without the threat of a filibuster?
What a clever trick. Make it look like Government can't accomplish anything by dragging feet on policies the REPUBLICANS suggest, then vote 'No' or filibuster. They count on their constituency being too f**king dumb to realize this. Then, they can point at how 'ineffective' Congress has been come election time.
Conspiracy theory? Nope. It's in their playbook and they've all but admitted to it if you're paying attention.

No one filibustered anything that prevented an actual response to the Gulf, yet why are we at day 72, with little to no progress? The kind of s**t storm that would've landed on a Conservative administration for such a response would have been insane.

So you are admitting your previous comment (Re: zomg if this was a conservative he'd catch a s**tstorm!) was nonsense, then? "Obama isn't catching a break, and he doesnt deserve one." Is that your amended commentary?
Now, as far as what he has done, I agree that it doesn't seem enough. What is he supposed to do? Put on his scuba gear and sit on the hole? Put on his robe and wizard hat? Summon Cthulu from the deep? I cannot answer. Nobody seems to know what to do. Especially the company who is expected to know, because its their business.
It appears a bit unseemly that he didn't accept foreign help earlier. I don't know why. However, I can imagine what we'd be hearing from the right-wingers if he had. "Oh look, Obama doesn't have any faith in American know-how or ingenuity! He's relying on those socialist Europeans to clean up the mess!"
If I were to fault him for anything, I would probably start with him not cleaning up the DOI/MMS sooner. Especially after it came to light that the MMS was having coke and sex parties with oil industry execs.
Again, stop pretending that Obama hasn't caught a lot of flack from both sides over this. It's getting old.

dougchristianJun 30, 2010
Yeah, except for all these things listed below, they've done nothing, NOTHING! Go f**k yourself Mark.
On Day One:
-Assembled a team of scientists and engineers led by Dr. Chu
-Directed BP to mobilize additional equipment and technology
-Directed BP to drill TWO relief wells for backup
Containment and Cleanup:
-Placed Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen (40 years of experience responding to disasters) in charge of the largest environmental cleanup effort in our nation’s history
-Held BP accountable - BP has spent $3 billion so far on containment and cleanup
-30,000 personnel are working across four states to contain and cleanup the oil.
-Thousands of ships and other vessels are responding in the Gulf -Authorized the deployment of over 17,000 National Guard members along the coast to help stop the oil from coming ashore, clean beaches, train response workers, or even help with processing claims.
-Millions of gallons of oil have been removed from the water through burning, skimming, and other collection methods.
-Over five and a half million feet of boom has been laid across the water to block and absorb the approaching oil.
-Approved the construction of new barrier islands in Louisiana to try and stop the oil before it reaches the shore, and are working with Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida to implement creative approaches to their unique coastlines...
Gulf Restoration:
-Got BP to set up $20 billion fund to pay damages quickly via 3rd party management
-Committed to a long-term plan to restore the Gulf
-"Appointed Ray Mabus, the Secretary of the Navy, a former governor of Mississippi, and a son of the Gulf, to develop a long-term Gulf Coast Restoration Plan as soon as possible. The plan will be designed by states, local communities, tribes, fishermen, businesses, conservationists, and other Gulf residents. And BP will pay for the impact this spill has had on the region..."
Future Prevention:
-Established a National Commission to understand the causes of this disaster and offer recommendations on what additional safety and environmental standards we need to put in place.
-Issued a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling
-"Secretary Salazar and I are bringing in new leadership at the (MMS) agency – Michael Bromwich, who was a tough federal prosecutor and Inspector General. His charge over the next few months is to build an organization that acts as the oil industry’s watchdog – not its partner"
-Advocating for alternative energy expansion

I dugg this for the funny although I am not a partisan (nope not a libertarian either!). I do think it could have been a TON more just off the top of my head and a lot of it could have been trimmed to cut to the chase with each person speaking.
I do think you'd probably catch some democratic slips as well if you wanted to, although I have to say that while equally corrupt they tend to be much more educated and careful about what they say. This in a sense makes them more dangerous because their veil of deception is not so thin as the Republicans.
What you get then is a balance of the throw back christians (Republicans) and the modernized hip intelligent (Democrats) who as they wind in and out of the majority are still spinning the same web and keeping you all in one camp or the other praying to the false dichotomy.
Fact is it takes little research to see that both parties are nearly entirely beholden to banks and corporate interests with very little if any care for the average citizen. We as average middle class citizens are not the care nor focus of any policy of any kind. This is why the middle class is vanishing. I posted a link concerning just that point but since I'm not a power user nobody saw it so I'll post it here in hopes you guys will see that a film from 2006 predicted absolutely EVERYTHING that happened since then to now economically.
http://digg.com/business_finance/In_Debt_We_Trust_Documentary_Film_for_Free_Prophetic
America is constantly warned of certain inevitable outcomes but instead chooses to be lead around by the nose to think, do, and say whatever the small band of media outlets complicit with the banks and major corporations tell them to. Thinking their little tussle over left and right actually means anything. If anyone at all who voted for Bush because of "family values" had taken one second to research him and his family you'd have known he was in a satanic cult in college and still doing the secret handshake that he did openly for the cameras with John Kerry who was in the same cult. That alone should have put any christian or family values type off him for good; let alone told you that the parties are complicit. But it doesn't because you do what the idiot box tells you.

Really, Putin's going to go to Alaska to work on trade agreements and border issues with Russia's Alaskan equivalent. I highly doubt that. The border between Russia and Alaska is in the middle of nowhere.
Unlike Alaska, the southern US has a very active border between the US and Mexico. Governors of these states probably have visited with the President of Mexico, and I know for a fact that the current governor of Texas has met with the Mexican President multiple times.

The quotes typically used by Repubs (57 states) are gaffes, mistakes. The quotes in these videos generally explain policy beliefs in honest terms, unfortunately for those that said them. You're already on my block list but I'll post a quick reply anyway.
Again, that's just another example of the GOP focusing on a poorly-worded statement and twisting it into something "racist". How about the real issue behind the comment - Kanjorski trying to help people fight foreclosure. Where does his opponent stand on that tiny detail?
boombyeJul 1, 2010
Sounds like he's standing up for people who have been insulted by the right for many years, from always complaining about "minorities" to ranting about the social programs that they think are about one thing and in reality don't even know the people who get to benefit from them... I know plenty of people who haven't brought thugs into the world, don't do drugs, and work, that have collected welfare, but as much as the right wants to insinuate they're what's wrong with the country, they should look at themselves in the mirror. Instead of bashing minorities or the poor and others struggling, they should realize that while many might take advantage of the system, there are many people who have no other choice that DO try and better themselves. Sometimes they live in neighborhoods which are far removed from a place to work, and usually those jobs try not to hire people from these neighborhoods because they perhaps think the same way of minorities and people who benefit from programs as the Republicans do.
banmenowJul 1, 2010
How is that racist? In fact, that seemed to be the complete opposite of racism.
