guardian.co.uk — When I first read about the gigantic, whimsical developments in Dubai, I felt a bit uneasy. None of it sounded even vaguely sustainable. But what did I know? Clearly the people paying for all this knew precisely what they're doing. But it appears the hazy sense of "but surely they can't do that . . ." may have been precisely the correct response.

Yeah but you see, America had an influx of millions upon millions of immigrants during the period of it's greatest growth. When there was pretty much nothing west of the Mississippi. Dubai, not so much.
