The problem with the phrase "separation of church and state" is that it conflates two clauses in the First Amendment into one. The left is obsessed with the establishment clause and the right the free exercise clause. The phrase being discussed only deals with the former. The **government** does not have the right to establish a religion but not at the expense of the denying **individuals** their free exercise rights. Thus, you don't teach Creationism or Intelligent Design in the schools but you allow a valedictorian to express her religious views even if they happen to be Christian.
To be a Christian means "to emulate Christ." This means help your brothers and neighbors, be good, preach peace, etc. That's IT. It does not mean to jup on the right of a political spectrum and hate all of those of other ideas, sexualities or religions.Poor Jesus would be rolling in his grave if he knew what a martyr the Religious Right (as well as the Spanish Inquisitors, Vatican, crusaders, etc) have made out of him...
