Why would someone run all the fancy GUI applications (including the clock, task bar) with their possible security vulnerabilities as root/Administrator? It is totally pointless. On linux you only run tasks as root when it is needed, eg. you run as root the software installer.

SMB works for me. I see all the shares on all my windows servers. And yes all those shares require authentication when you try to access them.

WTF....guess I won't be upgrading either as I don't want to loose the 3-D graphics. Come on Nvidia/Ubuntu team get it fixed already!!!! Last I checked Ubuntu wants users to experience a newer type of desktop experience, can't really get that done without support for older graphics cards.....just when I was begging to really like Ubuntu this happens, I may start booting back to XP if that can't get this fixed!

Here are the problems you may run into with 8.10It's difficult to configure the ethernet for a static IP, and by default, ethernet isn't enabled unless you're actually logged in. You will not be able to SFTP to your machine. VMWare requires a patch to install it if you're on a 64 bit system using the 64 bit version of Ubuntu. The sound is still broken all over the place, as bad or worse than 8.4. USB will not work by default under VMWare with 8.10 - this problem also still exists in 8.4. Compiz is very crashy in 8.10, so save your configuration. The samba setup utilities are awful, still, just as in 8.4 - you won't be able to do something like \\IP_ADDRESS\username unless you hand configure the file.If you want a stable machine, stick with 8.4. The headaches I had with 8.10 trying to get it to run reliably AND WITH SOUND had me go back to my other partition with 8.4 running on it. I don't mind using bleeding edge software, but what does bother me is when something that is bleeding edge isn't advertised as bleeding edge. I wasted 2 weeks of my life with this system. I'll go back to it when it's more stable, and I wish they'd get rid of the damned PULSE audio server, it sucks, it sucks, it sucks. Someday it won't suck, but right now, it sucks, and it has no business being the default option in the system.
