torrentfreak.com — Dependent Records, an independent record label from Germany recently decided to shut its doors and upload all its albums onto The Pirate Bay. Interestingly, a year ago the the CEO of the label mentioned piracy as one of the main reasons why they decided to quit.

Personally after releasing my own music on the pirate bay and many other sites ThePirateBay is pretty poor for unknown and indie artists to get exposure on as your torrent just gets lost in the extremely big category called Music. MiniNova seems to be the best of the big torrent sites for indie/unknown artists, they have proper categories which people can browse and look down the genres which they like. They are also doing that preview music in torrents thing soon. ThePirateBay is extremely bad website for indie artists and discovering new music. MiniNova wins for me as a independent artists myself..

are you actually paying the band personally? are you aware the venues take huge cuts when a band plays? maybe you're seeing ultra small unsigned bands in VFA basements?...just because you pay at the door doesn't mean the bands are getting paid. And also....every band you see plays at a venue tiny enough that you can pay them directly? so that means you never torent anything since these bands don't have any CD's to download since they are so small. You're just rying to justify why you steal.

Sounds to me like you have absolutely no grasp on how Indie labels work.

I don't doubt that is the case, but how is pirating music helping them? If anything it hurts them even more because labels will likely pay talent less the more their music gets pirated. There is no moral justification for pirating music.

Wait, VAC is not a Skinny Puppy/FLA rip-off? That's funny.

well then get on that. Take the time out of your busy life to make a bunch of music and then give it away for free. I'm sure you'll be able to hold down a part-time job a McDonalds to support yourself so you can dedicate most of your free time doing the thing that you love. I'm sure everyone will send thank-you letters.

to argue about it is futile ... the paradigm is shifting ... the way the music industry works is getting a major overhaul ... "it's the end of the world as we know it" ... right now it's chaos ... and will be for a bit ... but once the dust settles, those who want to make money will figure out how to do just that ... they always do
