gizmodo.com — Just go to the site, pick an airport, and see a real-time display on planes flying in and out of your local hub. So far only major airports like Boston Logan International, LaGuardia, LAX, and my local San Jose International airport have plane tracking up. Pretty sweet app nonetheless.Link: http://www.java.com/en/everywhere/airportmonitor.jsp

The air force can use it to find planes.

The list of airports offered by this app is determined by whether or not those airports have paid Passur.com large amounts of money to provide this service for them. It's business, not a comprehensive service.

It's useful if you want to see how busy the airport air traffic is, especially on a holiday weekend and you're considering leaving for the airport earlier. Besides, there's a ten minute delay on departure/arrival data. Not very useful for those inbred Al Quaeda types with shoulder mount missiles.
