The phrase "Pursue Other Opportunities" were in quotes in the title, meaning what was said may not be the real reason about why they left. Sort of like when a child from an abusive family comes into school with a black eye, swollen lip, and cigar burns all over his body, and his reason for them is because he 'fell down the stairs and landed on an ashtray'.
I enjoyed it. It was very good for a launch title. Certainly way better than Red Steel. I loved the high-tech cyperpunk feel, the music and how greatly the gameplay experience changed depending on the difficulty. I mean, it was a pretty straight forward FPS on easy, but became almost a NOLF-like experience on harder difficulties. Plus, Joanna looked way hot in all the different cute outfits of hers. She made the N64 Joanna look butch.
Rareware will never be Ultimate Play The Game. Oh I miss them :-(The origins of Rare / Rareware were in a company called Ultimate Play the Game that used to create ass kicking games for the ZX Spectrum back in about 1984. They were know for pushing the edge back then, with games such as Jet Pac, Sabre Wulf and then Knight Lore. Although Psssst wasn't so good. What they did with a Z80A CPU was incredible. Really ground breaking graphics and gameplay compared with most of the games that had gone before.
Rare hasn't really made anything great since it's first split. Free Radical is a company that started when some employees left Rareware way back after the first Perfect Dark was released I think. If you've ever played time splitter games especially 2 and 3 you'll notice their simularities to Goldeneye and Pefect Dark, this is because they were Rare employees at one time, and probably some of the best of them. Yes I hope these guys establish something new, however they probably feel slighted Nintendo didn't buy Rare when it had the opportunity and therefore not develop for Nintendo consoles. I may be wrong but, I see these guys going PS3/PC. I really hope they come back to Nintendo though.

Good point. Although asking "why did they *really* leave?" might have been clearer.
