Doubtful. If you are a big enough artist, like radiohead, you can basically push the record companies around a bit because they dont want you to go label free. But, I don't know, you may be right...
I have heard interviews where they explain that they didn't want make this an example of some new business model or about promoting free music. They understand that they have an exceptional position to reap the benefits of this type of release. They were more interested in doing something different and outside there comfort zone.
artvandeleig: "Vinyl has higher highs and lower lows compared to CD."No, it has neither the frequency response or range that CDs do nor the consistency. And it is measurable so it can be proven.
I wonder if the fact that Radiohead is so enormously popular, and people know they already have a ton of money had any effect on how much someone payed for the album. If a smaller band did this that wasn't already commercially successful, I wonder if people would be more inclined to pay more for the album.
I didn't pay at first for the explicit reason that the bit rate was too low. I rip everything at 320 so why would I pay for 160??? I eventually bought the CD. If they had $5 flacs or high bit rate mp3s they would have made ridiculous coin.
