hosted.ap.org — Buying an antenna for a high-definition television seems as out of place as using a rotary phone to make a call. But some consumers are spending thousands of dollars on LCD or plasma TVs and hooking them up to $50 antennas that don't look much different from what grandpa had on top of his black-and-white picture tube.

Is this only in the USA? I'm from Canada and I don't know about anyone getting hd over the air... we have cable and it's not even hd :/

I recently purchased a 10 year old home and one of the many artifacts left behind was a huge UHF antenna. It was mounted atop a pole and secured to the rear of the house. Truth be told the thing was an eyesore so when doing some recent renovations I got it in my head to tear the thing down. Thankfully laziness got the better of me and I never bothered to remove it. I say thankfully because after HBO decided to cancel Rome I decided to cancel DirecTV. This left me needing something to help with my TV reception. Considering I already had the big freaking antenna, I simply rewired all the DirecTV cabeling to it and suddenly I was in free OTA HD glory. I wasn't even aware ATSC was in my area nor that my old antenna could adequately pull the signal. There's so little information on ATSC. Someone needs to evangelize this stuff.

The point is that it's the original feed available to us so it's as good as we're going to get it. While the cable and satellite companies compress it even more.

@elranzer:I agree. I have a 30" CRT HDTV, and the picture is excellent. The blacks are the biggest difference I notice than compared to an LCD or even newer plasmas which have come a long way with black coloring. The only thing I dislike is that it sticks out 3 feet from the wall and weighs 5 million pounds!

There are plenty of good CRT-HDTVs that beat the pants off their Plasma and LCD cousins. They only thing that's really holding them back is they max out at about 30".Actually, Sony makes a 40" HD CRT TV (at least they did up until a year or two ago). And it only Weighs 286lbs.http://www.savinglots.com/lotprod.asp?item=KV40XBR700
