gizmodo.com — Yesterday's new iPods were lovely and all, but if you're like me, you wanted something more. Like some notebooks. Not to worry, Daring Fireball's John Gruber says according to the standard "sources familiar with Apple's hardware plans" that its "Let's Notebook" event will happen on Oct. 14.

@Macintoshreader: Sorry, but what you've said is total crap. That article doesn't just cover Linux malware, but also malware affecting other Unix-like OS's, including OS X. A Google search gives plenty of details of Mac OS X-viruses.While it's possible that there MAY be more malware for Linux (after all, between the desktop, embedded and server, Linux is almost certainly the most widely used Unix-like OS), that doesn't by any means indicate that it's more vulnerable to it. OS X is highly standardised - each install will have Safari, for instance, so it's more likely that all OS X installs will be vulnerable to one specific attack. By comparison, the diversity of Linux means what can affect one distro may not affect another, say if it uses Konqueror instead of Firefox. Also, the vast majority of Linux distros release patches for vulnerabilities very quickly once they are found, sometimes in a matter of hours. The whole Debian SSL incident was resolved very quickly once it was found. By comparison, it took Apple a long time to sort out a patch for the error in the DNS system (and apparently that was for just OS X Server, I don't know if it's been released for desktop). And the article does state that some Linux machines should run antivirus, but that is ONLY in cases where they are sharing files with Windows machines - ie when they are being used for Samba servers or mail servers, in which case the Linux machine is not vulnerable to the virus, the only issue is that it could be passed on to the Windows machines.

There are only 6 models to choose from in the first place. The MacBook Air is currently ahead of a very expensive computer that is designed for professionals and an under-powered computer that doesn't include a monitor, keyboard, or mouse.
