Prepaid iPhone hack. Cool? Sure. Practical? Uh, not really. Observe this quote:"What about the data plan from the other phone? Does it work as well as the voice plan? Yes. I tested this out using my $10 phone card's MEdia Net. At $0.01/kilobyte, it cost $0.11 to load Google's home page."

Pretty interesting but sounds expensive. I wonder though if you look at the total overall cost of the iPhone + AT&T plan versus your own personal usage whether it would work out better if, say you figure you'll only keep the iPhone a year and then either trade up or sell it....

"I just sent a couple of photos and it look like it cost about a dollar each. The photos were about 90K in size and snapped on the iPhone."A dollar for 90k. Maddox was right.

Even if you get a iPhone through the GoPhone plan (i.e. the SSN trick you mentioned) - it will end up costing you $49.99 a month with data plan. The point of this article (and why it's interesting) is that he was able to use a pre-pay $10 card with the iPhone. This is AWESOME for people who don't want to be stuck in a 2 year contract and who don't want to pay a recurring monthly fee (i.e. the people who are just happy to pay for the calls/data that they actually use, and nothing more). I for one, think this rocks.

This hack makes sense for someone like me. I work at home in the sticks, and have no cell service. When I use the iPhone, I would be in the city. I don't use my cell very much as I can't use it 70% of my time. The prepaid card would actually save me hundreds a year. I would just need to remember to surf with wifi!
