en.wikipedia.org— A Wikipedia chart of the video and computer game series, Quake (mostly its engine), and its many descendants unto the nth generation. From http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/12/quake-family-tree.html ...

The quake engine was used as a starting point for the source engine, lots of things were added, and lots of things were replaced as time went by.These days, very little (if any) of the quake source code is left, but the original code was there at the start, so it is derived from quake.
I was wondering if someone was going to say something about the MoH series. Really it was just AA, SH, and the other that I cant really remember right now. Those were complete copies of the q3 engine. No mention of Unreal Tournament or any of the Unreal series period. Also I dont know if Doom 3 would consitute falling under the q3 engine. I mean there are aspects of it, but nothing that would be signifigant.

A sprite is an image element that's separate from the background. Besides, the PC never had sprites.

Unfortunately they don't get a red cent for someone else making a game based on the "ideas from their technology", so I fail to see your point.
