wired.com — Sure, you could fill your video iPod with episodes of Knight Rider from iTunes for $2 a pop. Or you could save some cash - and your soul - and fill it with files you convert from your DVD collection using freely available software.

Handbrake on the Mac works well but, if you have access to an XP machine as well, a much better solution is Pocket DVD Wizard on the PC which gets the job done much quicker

I must say, that this article is extremely basic, and to those arguing those who are non-geeky don't know how to do this; how many read digg?

Sorry that bit about the battery life was confusing. If you are watching your higher res video on the iPod's screen the video processor needs to work harder to convert the high res movie to a lower resolution for the screen. This will decrease the battery life. As far as i can tell, output is output and the battery life doesn't change based on what resolution you are using. The movie doesn't display on the iPod whilte it is plugged into a TV and the backlight turns off, so the battery life is pretty decent.

Some of these articles have less info than the user comments here contain. I'll try to inform this time...Handbrake [free - Mac - Universal Binary] rips from DVD, to recompress for the iPod or for hard-drive based viewing, allows pretty easy control of settings. Not for making backup DVDs.Supported sources:Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (even encrypted)PAL or NTSCAC-3, LPCM or MPEG audio tracksOutputs:File format: MP4, AVI or OGMVideo: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer encoding)Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracksiSquint [free - Mac - Universal Binary] converts nearly any video file (except wmv3) for the iPod. This provides Fast MPEG-4 and H.264 conversion for the iPod from almost every popular video format except DVD, from 3GP to XviD. (WMV3 not supported but who uses that?) Simplified compared to Handbrake, doesn't use DVD directly as source, extremely simple with default output file for direct iPod viewing, or higher quality iPod for TV viewing modes. Both can be played on your computer too, but for that purpose most people would want higher quality (bigger image area) and would probably use ffmpeg-X for transcoding. Not for making backup DVDs. Does offer access to detailed settings too, but doesn't attempt to make them simple (stick with defaults)To use this with a DVD as source you'd have to rip the data from DVD with MacTheRipper first (be prepared for a large file from that)Different software is used for making backups of DVDs. Typically the data is ripped from DVD with MacTheRipper (free - Mac - PPC). Unless you have a dual-layer burner (cheap) and dual-layer media (expensive), the resulting files are often too big to fit on cheap single-layer DVDs (about 4.3 gig max). DVD2OneX (commercial Mac PPC & Windows) can recompress the data to bring the file size down. Burning is free with Apple's Disk Utility which works when DVD2OneX is set to produce a disc image file. Toast 7 (commercial - Mac PPC) is very popular for burning many types of discs, and works from properly prepared video files as well as disc image files. Roxio Popcorn (commercial - Mac PPC ?) offers recompression and burning in one app.Information for "fair use" of DVDs only. Be aware of the laws governing your location when deciding what you can do. If they're unreasonable tell your elected officials how you feel and why.
