guardian.co.uk— Russia's next parliament is likely to have no genuine opposition after a court in Moscow yesterday banned a leading liberal party from standing in elections.

You are a f**king retard...has your mother told you this yet? If not, she should. Why don't you save us all and leave the US and go to Russia so we can spare you having to live under Bush.
@ DAGONthehauge>I don't care, I don't live in Russia. Let them russians sort it out themselves. Let's just hope they don't bother the rest of the world.Yes, thank you, leave our country to us. I just hope while US bothering the rest of the world will leave us alone, but it's desperate.>Too bad they have nukes. Yes, thanks God we have them, we wouldn't like bombardments of our cities.>What's happening in Chechnya is WAY worse than Iraq, and Iraq is already unholy.Tell me-tell me, I see you know the WAY. In any cases, Chechnya is a part of Russia and calm now, but Iraq is on another continent and very hot. Don't tell us how to handle with our enemies.
@fishmasta: sorry, the other side of the story cannot be explained in a few paragraphs. However, I can provide some highlights with regard to the topic:1. "a court in Moscow yesterday banned a leading liberal party from standing in elections." - FALSE where it says that they are LEADING. The liberal party, "Republicans", they refer in this article, has been recently created by former activist of "SPS" (Unity Of Right Forces) and "Jabloko" (Apple) parties, Vladimir Ryzhkov. Here, http://news.ng.ru/2005/01/25/1106664404.html, he announces (about 1 year ago) that he is going to create some sort of another liberal party, which will be in opposition to currently ruling party ER (Edinaja Rossia, - United Russia). His Republican party was registered in 2002, so, it's interesting, why he is announcing his plans to create one more with Kasparov. This is a microscopic party, and by no means it can be considered as a leading one or even as a significant political force.2. What was the ruling of the court? So, according to the law, every party has to be registered at Federal Registration Service and should comply to current rules and regulations, for example, number of members and regional branches. When number of members drops below the low limit, FRS obliged be law to seek party liquidation in court. Not by voluntary decision, but in court. Ryzhkov failed to provide a proof that they have more members, than enough to be a registered party, so, the court decision was pretty straightforward.Recent elections showed no support of this party by Russian people. I doubt they got even 1% of votes, most probably much less.According to the law any political party has to have at least 50 000 members and 44 regional branches in Russia in order to be registered by FRS and take part in elections. Ryzhkov's party had only 39896 members in 33 regional branches. Compare to other parties: United Russia: 1 390 000 members, Liberal-Democratic Party: 500 000+ members, True Russia: 400 000+ members. 3. Ryzhkov and Kasparov are so called "attention whores"; they create so much noise, exploiting "Putin is evil" theme that no wonder they are more popular outside of Russia, than inside. Specifically, they work on "Evil Russia" image, being financed by some foreign forces (via proxies under "pro-democracy" organizations umbrella directly financed by US and Western Europe; there was a lot of screaming when law enforcement forces in Russia made an attempt to cut this channel). These folks create as much noise in press as they can for one reason: they need more money to fight "Evil Putin" and "build a true democracy" in Russia, despite the fact that they don't have any serious support by regular Russians. Why are they not supported by Russians? Because of two things: a) they don't address real problems of people; b) they are so pro-American, it's not even funny.
So, basically, this guy is on "non-Russia orgs" payroll. He is failing on political scene, but not because of Putin (as he wants everybody to think), but because of his inability to address what Russian people need.
One more bit of information: http://www.lenta.ru/news/2007/03/28/party/ The party (Russian Party of Peace) headed by Kobzon (artist) is also liquidated, earlier there were another six tiny parties which got closed for the same reason: too small to participate in elections. This is normal process of making sure that political forces are compliant to law. It's not dictatorship of Putin, it's dictatorship of the law.
Is Russia returning to its pre-cold war Evil Empire status really a bad thing? It seems as if the collapse of the Soviet Union gave American neo-conservatives a free pass for any middle-east shenanigans they could dream up. Would a semi-hostile European superpower act as a balance for any further imperialist expansionism?
