arstechnica.com— The Alky project aims to let Windows XP users who don't want to upgrade to Vista in on the DirectX 10 gaming action. Linux and OS X might come along for the ride. Don't get your hopes up yet, though.

They don't even need Alky to do it. All they need is OpenGL and DX10 hardware. It will work in Linux and OS X too. The PS3 is a good example of the latest gaming capabilities of OpenGL in action.
GMorgan "What about virtual memory and program scheduling? Or are those not "hardware features."That are driver's dependant. Unified shader memory is implemented in hardware and exposed via driver. Transparent to the programmer
wow sorta was/is crossplatform. There's a win version, there's a OSX version, for both ppc and x86. OSX might be different from linux, but not THAT different. Also in the early beta's there was a linux client. They are just not releasing it because of support issues n stuff. Or maybe it was because it was to overpowerd :)
@BlackadderIIII challenge you to browse over WildTangent's library of games and find a single one that is even worth playing. Regardless of Alex's history with Microsoft, he is now CEO of a company that produces crap games. It'd be difficult to find a single person who would care if 90% of WildTangents games stopped working.Sorry if I offended any "Lemonade Tycoon" fans.

The only concern I have is SDL's hardware support. Most modern graphics cards have certain DX and OpenGL support built in.

Virtual memory and scheduling are part of the OS rather than the API.

Call me cynical, but I'd guess that some software houses will have financial incentives for using DirectX over OpenGL.
