whatpc.co.uk — A university professor used sandpaper to remove the logo markings from Motorola mobile phone chips and passed them off as his own invention. He got away with it for THREE YEARS and received millions of dollars in government funding!

Hanxin (the name of the chip) meant "Chinese Heart". It looks like the fake heart will fail to pump new blood into the Chinese cell phone market. Sorry I could not resist!Unfortunately, it seems that the team was actually working on their own chip (hopefully Chinese tech this time?) and it looks like the project may have been scrapped. Truth be told, this is probably a minor short term setback, as cheap Chinesse DSPs seem to be an eventuality, espically considering how much money the government had pumped into this project.

"However, he has now been fired from his post and will have to repay millions of dollars in Gvernment funds invested in the project, reports say."Wow. I wonder what it is like to live in a country where corporate fraud is not rewarded by the government. The US was once like that.

This story seems to embody some of the more common stereotypes about China or asians. Ie: that they're great at copying but really suck at coming up with anything significant on their own. Or that Chinese society is corrupt - Prof Chen gets full marks for his ability to wangle several million $ out of the commust gov't.
