fishbowl.pastiche.org — "I’m worried by the fact that a licence I thought was perpetual can be revoked so arbitrarily." This is a story explaining why the RSS reader for Mac OS X called NewsFire has caught some of the Microsoft evil.

hi troll… Newsfire isn't made by Apple. just like Half Life isn't made by Microsoft.

Newsfire aside, product activation should be stopped. Pirates easily avoid it and it annoys the heck out of legitimate customers. It's completely pointless other than forcing most users to turn over an email address which can then be send newsletters and other spam...I had to reactivate Quark the other week just to install their stupid incremental update. When it wouldn't work I had to reinstall completely. When was it decided that all users should be considered pirates unless proven otherwise? What a load of crap.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Keeping people from using office 97 would probably be a kindness. Scratch that, it would be a kindness, no probably about it.

f**k the families and f**k you. Now go back and overdose on children whining over rss readers. Turn a blind eye to what is really important in life. Go ahead. The future is in your hands...but it looks like a s**tty future full of kids whining over software activation and poor me bulls**t. Your life is sad if you think rss readers are the important story of the day. you f**king moron.

Product activation can/is horrible when implemented wrong. It can be simple and easy to use when done right. However, I'm no expert in the field, but I know what has worked well for me in the past. Alcohol 120%'s activation has always been smooth for me despite my constant changing of hardware. While I do wish I could use it on more than one computer (without paying for another license, but that's just hoping =P), If I do something that has me reinstall Windows, all I do is log in on their page, deactivate the current registration and reactivate it using the hardware ID for my new setup. Really simple. Plus it makes Alcohol-Soft happy knowing I am only using my one license but I always have access to it. Heck, I can always go through the process if I *really* needed it on another computer, e.g a friend's. Doesn't bother me, only take 5 minutes, and I can wait.Oh, and I haven't seen something as trivial as an add-on card break it, but maybe I just wasn't bothered by it remember. /sorry about spelling if spell check missed it. Can't type on a laptop :(

It's cool that you're referring to Slashdot as /.

Crackers, thieves who makes little software houses adopt such methods while they sure know it will get such pointless flames sucks. Not product activation.Try to count how many small, great shareware development houses went out of business because of piracy and next time , think again before referencing Microsoft.

As long as the code he uses is within the terms of the license you can't really complain about the way he uses it. If the originators of the license wanted everything related to that code to be free or shared then they should have added a license saying that.I personally have had no problems with any of his software and not been stung by the licenses on any of my 3 macs so I can't really comment any further than that.

FYI... Inquisitor became free on release of version 3, prior to that it required a small fee to use all of the features. Which i paid.Quote: *waves at Watanabe's girlfriend*I forget sometimes that its not just adults that leave comments on Digg.
