salon.com — The president's "new defense" of the war in Iraq? Pretty much the same as his old defense of the war in Iraq: The war in Iraq is part of a larger war on terrorism, and that war is a lot like World War II, the Korean War and some other wars in which we've fought.

Actually, he's spot-on right. Regardless of what you think about whether or not we should have been there in the first place, the U.S. bugged out of Vietnam on the eve of our victory there. We had completely destroyed the VietCong as a viable fighting force - they could not continue - as the Tet Offensive was their last desperate attempt to gain some kind of military advantage. The abject failure of Tet broke their backs. After that it was just a matter of time, and not much time at that.Walter Cronkite came back after Tet and told Nixon that the war could not be won. He lied to the President of the U.S. to advance his own political ideology, and that led directly to us pulling out. He should have been shot as a traitor for it.If you want to hate Bush so badly, at least please know something about actual history so you can hate him for good reasons.

So norman, you obviously think that unthinking makes you more of an american - I think that kind of blind patriotism wastes the efforts of my two grandfathers fighting in WW2. Look, I have nothing against the troops (but I am not all fanboi about it either) and I agree that from a practical standpoint, that kind of unthinking resolve is critical in a soldier, but that is only valuable at the tactical level. Every soldier should have the right to question the overall "rightness" of their service (actually, it should be an order).

Remember, the people behind Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the Bush clan have been meddling in "nation building" in support of their own corporate war profiteering since WW2 (re: Prescott Bush was a Nazi war collaborator in pursuit of profit). We shouldn't be surprised that the same grafting chicken-hawks who don't want to stop the current military industrial gravy train known as Iraq still regret the end of the previous military industrial gravy train known as Vietnam.

Yes, but still, the Frogs are a bunch of Surrender Monkeys - it's like they built the Arch De Triumph in anticipation of the Wehrmacht ;)

What are we waiting for then? Lets go back and disillusion the remaining 15% of the people that still support Bush.
