"Turn Off Messages: You can choose to turn off messages by going through your security options and modifying your firewall settings." This alone can save folks tons of wasted minutes...

Drying your device in silica gel will get silica dust into the cracks and result in failure over time when the gel heats up and coagulates in the moving parts, such as under the keyboard.
