Things need to change. The US is a country that is rich enough to do something about poverty, yet we ignore it. People shouldn't go hungry in a country like this.
Are you seriously suggesting we just divide $800,000,000,000 across every single person in the USA good first question: How would we get it to the homeless people?
Who's going hungry in this country? The word "poverty" is used as a political football. "Povery" in the US =/= poverty in the rest of the world. For example, a kid at college who's living off a combination of government loans, Mom & Dad's contributions and some pin money from a part-time job is counted as being impoverished under these guidelines, although they're living a lifestyle billions in the world would give their eye-teeth for.
If by "better" you mean fat-laden Mcs**t, you're right. But if you're talking about eating healthy, beans, rice, canned fruits and veggies ain't expensive. What do you think people ate a century ago, Swanson's Frozen Dinners?A lot of people using "food stamps" are eating expensive crap food that tastes good, not what's good for them. That's why you've got so many fat "poor" kids.

Since poverty has traditionally been defined as the poorest 10% of Americans, I'm surprised it was that high.

Nice strawman. You know what I mean. I'm not talking about some kid at college who can't afford beer. I'm talking real poverty.
