socialistsushi.com — Finally, someone has hacked the venerable PuTTY ssh client to store its settings in the filesystem rather than the registry. That means, settings are easily copied to other machines and especially your USB flash drive.

No... it's really not that interesting.

How do you know this copy hasn't been tampered with?
bfordhamMar 22, 2006
You don't. Muhahahaha. So if you're nervous, download, examine, and compile the source.

The portability of Putty wasn't a big deal for me. I only use it on the corporate lan where I remote desktop to my machine or from home where I VPN into the corporate LAN. At home I have a local copy but since I only access about a dozen servers it really wasn't a big deal to put in all the accounts. What I'd really like to do with putty is be able to change the color of my mouse cursor in a putty window. I can never see the damn thing!

I did something similar in February '04. <a class="user" href="http://use.perl.org/~Mr.+Muskrat/journal/17451">http://use.perl.org/~Mr.+Muskrat/journal/17451</a>

I've been doing this for a few years (more than 3) now. It's all documented at <a class="user" href="http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter4.html#config-file">http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter4.html#config-file</a>Sorry, but no digg.

I was thinking of a portable SSH client :)

I've put up a UK mirror for anyone who's interested: <a class="user" href="http://www.termisoc.org/portaputty.zip">http://www.termisoc.org/portaputty.zip</a>

I dugg this too soon. The profile saving feature isn't working all that good. It didn't save my colors or font sizes.

I've got a better portable putty version that saves fonts and colors properly:<a class="user" href="http://www.grack.com/blog/articles/2006/08/31/portable-putty-0-58">http://www.grack.com/blog/articles/2006/08/31/portable-putty-0-58</a>

With the new PuTTY Tray<a class="user" href="http://www.xs4all.nl/~whaa/putty/">http://www.xs4all.nl/~whaa/putty/</a>you can choose if you want to save to the registry or in files. On top of that it also supports URL hyperlinking, transparency and minimizing to tray with a (custom) tray icon.

For those of you nay-saying the benefit of file based session and config settings... and then linking to the putty doc pages that describe loading and unloading of reg settings... these are NOT the same things. Some of you are probably aware of the portable apps movement supported by standards like U3 and such... some of us may find ourselves needing to work from a PC where we will not have admin rights that will allow us to modify the registry, but from which we might still need to run apps like PuTTY.
