arstechnica.com — The porn industry has quietly coexisted with P2P services for many years, but some have decided that enough is enough. A group of industry members held a roundtable discussion on how to address piracy last week, with ideas ranging from posting screenshots of pirated content to adapting their business models to be more aggressive.

"The porn industry understands that their "talent" does something that most of the populace can do"I hear maintaining an erection in front of a bunch of guys with cameras is actually pretty difficult for most men, as is maintaining ejaculatory control.

imo DRM is like gun control laws, it only effects the law abiding. any DRM pretty much = 5 min delay for the pirates and endless headaches for legit consumers. just look at the throws the game industry is going through. people will pay for good content if its worthy and pirate it and discard it if its not. Bioshock, creatively its a game of the year title, but its so DRM'd up the ass that half the people who bought it can't even INSTALL it, let alone play it. The other half have enormous difficulty getting it to run.The last thing a guy wanting to take care of his s**t before bed wants to do is log in and authenticate his token ID and wait for his silverlight content to decrypt.

Until the porn industry takes a public stand against their own "questionable" marketing tactics they have little sympathy from me.

True, but aren't we tired of most of what's on TV now? The content on MTV reality shows isn't much better than what can be produced by an idiot with good equipment. Reality TV 'should' eventually die. The popularity of programs with production values such as Heroes and Lost have cemented a following. Until a layman can produce shows with quality stories and decent enough production value, I still think we will have to suffer through a bunch of crappy shows until one with a character and storyline speaks to a majority of people. Supposedly HBO will be showing a new series where mainstream stars engage in more explicit acts. It's funny. Mainstream audiences obsess about love scenes where big name stars are obviously not having explicit intercourse, yet when they actually do consumate an act(Brown Bunny) it gets panned. Not having seen the movie, I can't speak to the plot. But I do think there will be more edgy crossover stuff(Last Tango in Paris) as mainstream stars care less about their image and more about the 'art' of the story. However, all this is moot as long as the MPAA decides what we get to see and what we don't. In addition to technical quality changing productions, I also think distribution will change as well and for the better.

Are you saying that the porn industry shouldn't take action against illegal downloading because children who download it wouldn't have any other way to get it?I'm confused.

If anybody can figure out how to combat piracy, it will be the porn industry. They embrace technology rather than shy away from it. I guess you could say they like things bigger and better.

Tell you what: when the porn industry stops being the #1 employer of spammers, false advertising, pop-ups, deceptive links, ad-farms, and generally just being as dirty in their business practices as they are in their videos, I'll start to feel bad for them getting their stuff pirated. Until then? Shaaaadup!
