cnn.com — Police shot and killed an unarmed young man outside his Brooklyn apartment Monday night after his mother reported a "family dispute with a gun," police and witnesses said. Police told The New York Times they believed that Khiel Coppin, 18, had a gun, but after five officers fired 20 shots they realized he was holding only a hairbrush.

Nah, he shouldn't do that. He would probably get an officer killed.

@ Sabach:15 rounds, actually; Brooklyn cops use .40 caliber Glock 22s now.Still, point remains the same.

At what point were the police informed they were dealing with a mentally ill suspect?

What if she DIDN'T know he didn't have a gun, but made her believe he did, like he did with the cops?

How about shooting once him once in the arm instead of 20 times? Everyone's life is precious.

OK everyone has an opinion here, well here is mine.I'm black 27 and i grew up in NYC, spent a lot of time in the streets as a teen. Now I know that the police use excessive force and do not really care about the issues that matter to the mostly poor people living in a lot of the ethnic neighborhoods.. besides Jewish .( they govern there own neighborhoods, which is not a bashing,, this is quite good and works). But in this case I could definitely see this was an accident. But people need to question weather all the facts even become relevant as far as if he actual brandished a gun or if the mother notified the CAPTAIN who was on the scene at the time of the shooting that her son did not really have a weapon. i would think that with a superior officer there, a kid who was mental would have to be shoot so many times. If you factor in the amount of times the officers sent stray bullets which missed their intended target out into a crowded community then they could have at least saw thew gun first. same reckless bullets are flying around anyway. At east hit the target maybe 3 times and wait. Can they bring any shooters in alive. I would think that was good police work. this is more like a posse (NY PD) who breaks the same laws that they are supposed to uphold. You cant claim self defense until you see a weapon , not a hoax. Commissioner Kelly shouldn't be so quick to cover s**t up with a statement. Does this city ever admit wany wrongdoing???? does any city, or system. enough with the babble anyhow the officers so far from what it seems are justified in this shooting.. though a situation like this should not always end up like this.. why don't white people get shot with unidentified object in their hand.?

I was going to say that, for once, the cops didnt act like bastards as they usually do... until i read this at the end" Bystander Dyshawn Gibson described Monday's shooting to CNN affiliate WABC-TV. "He dropped the brush," Gibson said. "He put his hands up. Police just started firing." "For f**ks sake, you think that they've for once done something right, and yet in the end, you realize they are still bastards. What is wrong in their heads...? do you get injected with stupid, power-tripping drugs when you sign up to the academy or what?
