blog.cleveland.com — The owner said he was away when his burglar alarm went off. Officers responded and started to check the back door to see if anyone had broken in. The family dog came running out and was shot in the head by Officer Mark Morales. Morales was not bitten or scratched by the dog and he neither tried to kick the dog away or use a taser or pepper spray.

This is just a bad situation. Regardless of lab's temperaments, almost any dog is going to act like a raging lunatic when you enter their territory. My labs carry on like a serial killer is on the porch when the UPS guy rings the bell and they are the biggest chickens. He probably thinks they want to kill him even though they are just excited. If they aren't your dogs, I think it is impossible to tell what the dogs are going to do. They are so much faster than us; they don't really give you time to figure them out. I don't think there is a way to control a dog that wants to hurt you. When I was carrying mail, one of the other carriers was attacked by a dog. He emptied two cans of Halt on the dog, jumped over fences, and finally was able to stop him by throwing rocks.

not just jail, but likely prison for life. it's straight up considered "murder of a police officer".now, i'm not advocating hurting police dogs (because they are awesome!) - but seriously ?

Thats because people and the law have elevated officers (and by extension their dogs) above the common citizen.A murderer kills a citizen, 10 years to life.A murderer kills a cop, automatic life or death sentence. And we wonder why cops think they are above the law?

I don't think the cop should be executed, but losing his job sounds like a perfectly reasonable reaction to what he's done, and his wife can blame him for their financial crisis. I hope he's never allowed to wear a badge and hold a position of authority over anyone, because what he did was outrageous and un-called for. He might have a future career in a private security firm, but don't ever let him hold a real badge again.

This is such a shame! Labs are not vicious dogs - I'm sure shooting the dog was completely unnecessary. This cop is too trigger happy for my liking.
