tomwritesablog.blogspot.com — "Today I glanced at the leader board, which breaks out the calculations by platform, updated hourly, and realized that the PS3 has taken the program to a completely new level, now accounting for 666 of the total 920 TeraFlops (72%!) of total distributed computing power. And it's probably increased since I checked. How crazy!"

@electrosoccertuI'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I thought I was going to drown alone in this sea of false positivity. Although I'm glad that it's going to a good cause (the folding thing that is).

Cooling, eh? Fine. Let's say that cooling doubles the electrical usage of the MD-GRAPE3. It would still use 98% less electricity than its PS3 equivalent, at a savings of $9.8 million.

I guess we should shutdown servers and such also, how about those macs and Linux boxen that everyone says run forever with rebooting? fridges, freezers, air conditioners, heaters, xboxs. Lights, lights, lights. Do you think shutting down a few hundred thousand or a few million PS3s are going to make a difference.Actually, lets shut them all down and say "We might have cured Cancer but chudgoo said not to bother trying, it wastes electricity."

My PS3 felt pretty hot so I'm turning mine off until I get some confirmation that it's not an issue. Is this normal? The air blowing from it is pretty warm... like not a comfortable warm as in you might get a burn if you leave your hand on there for along time.

Yes, although there are MORE PS3's total, LESS PS3's are running F@H for MORE time. Meaning they are are gaming or not running F@H.It's really not that complicated, they haven't changed any sort of calculation methods or anything like that, just a slight and simple error where it lies in basic math. When you make a small change to a big number of things, you end up with a big change overall. More folks with PS3's that run F@H are running F@H for less time than they were before.

The client for the PS3 is specialized. If you have a quad core Windows box -- there is a Windows SMP client that JUST came out.But you must understand -- the GPU client and the PS3 client can only do a subset of the workunits from the project. Many of the workunits are done by the regular clients (uni-processor machines or the SMP client).Best case scenario IMO? Buy a Mac. The Mac SMP Intel client is very well done. We're talking about doing some serious crunching...The SMP clients currently spawn 4 threads, so if you have a dual core machine, you're not being 100% efficient, you need at least a quad core to be 100% efficient. If you have 8 cores, you would configure and run 2 SMP clients (there is a correct method in doing this). So to answer your question -- if you built a quad core machine you'd be working on wildly different workunits, but still contributing to science in a very very effective manner.BTW: nVidia cards are currently NOT supported with the GPU client. Perhaps later on if nvidia hooks up the Pande Group (the dudes in charge of the project) with some help I assume.

Wow what a suprise, a duplicate post on Digg getting high ass Diggs? http://www.digg.com/hardware/PS3_Tearing_up_Folding_HomeI posted that back last week and some other people did as well with no Diggs as well. And we posted directly to the source rather than some retarded Blog. Shows how flawed Digg is. Bury this crap.

And what a reason it is...I'm sure the National Cancer Institute would be more than happy to have your surplus $600.00. (and you CAN write it off this way)http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/NCI/donations

"b) Alluding to the fact that PS3 owners aren't playing games"NIce that you admit to it being fact =DIt's true thuogh, the 360 has better games for now. I can't wait for MGS4 though.
