People are starting to actually harass police over destroying valuable products instead of letting the Cops get away with treating it like they're melting down pistols and assault rifles. Good.
cyclonusripJun 24, 2010
Pistols and assault rifles are pretty valuable too imo. I think maybe there's a different distinction to be made there.
Closed AccountJun 24, 2010
Pistols and assault rifles are what can be used to prevent the cops from destroying valuable products, thus making them valuable products themselves.
pabstyloudmouthJun 24, 2010
Pistols and assault rifles do not kill people, people do. Change the world you live in before you go trying to change the world. Pot is one thing, taking my ability to defend myself from a tyrannical government is quite another.

The right to bear arms is a little shaky at best. It needs revision, but again, that just leaves too much room for the material minded politicians to take advantage of such a situation.

You guys talking down the 2nd amendment are no better than the assh**es who think the war on drugs is a righteous one. You're no better than those who support warrant-less wiretaps, free speech zones, etc etc.
Guns are perfectly fine for protection. Statistics don't lie. The only fantasy is that gun bans keep guns out of the hands of "bad guys".
Calling one of the main tenets of the constitution "shaky", what a joke.

Seriously, why wouldn't they send it to a place where medical marijuana is legal?
Closed AccountJun 24, 2010
Because that would make too much sense.
chaon93Jun 24, 2010
Because it is contraband, even in states that allow medical marijuana if it is produced illegally it would probably be destroyed too. If some factory was illegally producing morphine or something else it would be destroyed the same way.
Right now its treated as a medicine, not as a legal recreational drug.
caramba421Jun 24, 2010
Even if they wanted to, that would be risky business because transporting it across state lines would automatically make it a federal offense. The solution is to elect a president that will grow a pair and reschedule it, or delist it altogether.

jwk4heelsJun 24, 2010
Yeah that's some seedy, nasty schwag right there. Their math puts it at just under $60 for a quarter ounce, which is waaaaaaaay too pricey for weed that looks like that. Maybe more like $20-30 for a quarter, not that I would ever buy that s**t anyways.

tirauJun 23, 2010
Yet another example of how government is actively ignoring common sense and the wishes and well-being of its own constituents. The American Revolution was started due to interference in individuals' lives much smaller than what we're experiencing today with the War on Drugs, and at this very moment we're heading towards both aspects of another revolution pretty quickly (Legislative: medical and legalization initiatives, Violent: the disintegration of Mexico and the transformation of our border into a dangerous no-man's-land)
Closed AccountJun 24, 2010
Right. Let's just get rid of "government", including the police who helped enforce these drug laws and the police who helped enforce Arizona's recent immigration laws.
Because when the government does what you want it do regardless of how it's done, it's the government following the Constitution.
But when the government doesn't do exactly what you want it to, it's automatically a big, threatening government and must be destroyed according to the Constitution.
Hooray for all the convenient Christians, convenient Conservatives, convenient capitalists, dogmatic Democrats and logic-defying liberals.
jplolzJun 24, 2010
I like that you don't exclude anyone, because we're all doing it wrong since we still have this government.
Closed AccountJun 24, 2010
The government still exists because people on both sides continue to bitch about the end of the world if things don't go their way, and the 'solution' ends up somewhere in the middle instead.
Political compromise is when nobody likes the terms of the deal and everybody blames the other person for it.
speedsteamboatJun 24, 2010
I'm pretty sure that the American Revolution wasn't "started due to interference in individuals' lives." It was started because an illegitimate government overseas refused to give the colonies fair representation in parliament and wouldn't recognize the colonial representative government as legitimate.
Do you always just say that history is one thing or the other based on the argument you'd like to make?

nspriggsJun 24, 2010
Mixed with anything? Like what? I hate when people say that weed gets laced. It may happen, by accident or on a rare occasion, but It doesn't make sense, economically, for drug dealers to mix weed with any other drug. They'd be giving the adulterant away for free, which seems like the exact OPPOSITE method you want to follow to become a successful drug dealer.

tsothaJun 24, 2010
It's hard to know what you mean by that. The baby boomers were the hippies. Remember hippies? Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll? As a generation they did a lot more drugs than "Generation X" could even imagine.
People get more socially conservative when they have kids and when they get older. All the generations have done it - yours will too.
troypdxJun 24, 2010
Yep, I've become seriously disappointed with the baby boomers. They loved to cut loose in their teens and 20's, but now that they're middle aged and in power they're creating a police state that rivals the worst of them.
kotiyaJun 24, 2010
I dunno... I know baby boomers who were hippies and baby boomers who weren't, and there is a stark difference even when they got old. The hippie ones still settled down and raised their families, but they instilled greater moralities and open-mindedness.
janineeeJun 24, 2010
Why does everyone think all babyboomers were hippies? It was a generation where hippies existed, not a generation made up just of hippies.
Anecdote: The people I know from that generation were mostly born near the beginning of it and are extremely conservative. EXTREMELY and not because they changed, because that's how they have always been. They are also extremely religious.
idoitonlineJun 24, 2010
I echo those sentiments! I also feel that the religious right are a big part of that problem. Even so, I'm excited and confident that younger generations will continue to progress. I'd even venture to say that it's inevitable.
As you might have guessed, I'm a huge proponent of the outright legalization of marijuana, and I have a hard time believing that anyone really believes in it's supposed medical benefits. I'm willing to play along, though; as this is all means to progressing to the next phases of legalization.
Take the time to appreciate this. The fact that we are able to pass these bills into law speaks beautifully that the will of the people ARE prevailing!

Does the math in this story bother anyone else?
There are 16 ounces in 1 pound so the police seized 88,400 pounds of marijuana. The quality of the weed looks pretty s**tty (schwag) which means it will sell for anywhere between $50 and $75 an ounce depending on location. (It's $50 in Texas and when I was in NYC last time it was somewhere between $60 and $70.)
So the total amount seized had a street value (at least by my calculations) of somewhere between $4.4 and $6.6 million which is WAY lower than the estimate the cops provided. I think these kinds of numbers games only perpetuate the myth of law enforcement success in the war on drugs. Dealers think this s**t is funny but it's just insulting to everyone else.
However, I admit I could be wrong about my numbers and am curious to see what anyone else has to say....
tfindlayJun 24, 2010
They are probably overstating the quality of the marijuana.
andrewe323Jun 24, 2010
Yeah, that's what I figured too... However...
If they calculated the quality based on hydroponic prices (which is, conservatively, like $300 an ounce) then the total figure is over $26 million and A LOT more if it's sold in eights and grams.
Either way, I'm not sure how they got their $20 million number. So I figured it was just bulls**t

tsothaJun 24, 2010
They always assume high quality - it makes the headlines better and there's an informal competition between police agencies to get the biggest numbers.
Besides, who's gonna call 'em on it? The stuff they find is never going to market, so they can say whatever they want.
skeeordyeJun 24, 2010
it happens every time cops seize drugs. They always estimate high, their logic being that if it was all sold by the gram or some bs like that; Also higher numbers mean more potential for extra funding and bonuses.
janineeeJun 24, 2010
And that's an estimate without price breaks for bigger amounts.

andrewe323Jun 24, 2010
Yeah, I figured their figure based on the quality of weed should have been closer to $4.4 or $6.6 million... which places the price per ounce between $50 and $75. Way more realistic
tsothaJun 24, 2010
Why are people assuming it's low quality stuff? I didn't see anything about quality in the article.
flashypooJun 24, 2010
Because we looked at the picture in the article and know what s**tty dirt weed looks like.
nerfdudeJun 24, 2010
to be fair, it could be mids, so do the math at more like 100-130/oz to be a little more generous, if you want. but you can clearly see a few seeds in the closeup, so you're NOT getting more than that, end of story, unless the police estimated for selling 5500 pounds of weed in nickel bags.
