smallbusiness.aol.com — 3/50 encourages consumers to choose three locally-owned businesses and commit to spending $50 per month in them. Noting the influence that this relatively minor action can have, the project gives individual consumers a clear, concrete activity that they can do to support their local economies.

I doubt that anybody actually commits to this though. It seems like a good idea, just for someone else to try.

I may as well sign my paycheck over to the local pub owner. I'm just doing my part to heal America.

Is it weird that I dugg this and a recent article about Red Laser (a price comparison app for the IPhone)?

I completely agree that buying locally for its own sake is a bad idea. From my experience in my town though, buying locally often makes sense, because I usually save money when I buy locally, and I usually end up with a higher quality product. This often comes at the expense of me having to look around a little more for a given product/service, but the extra effort is usually worth it.I consider every business transaction with a particular company a vote for that company over others within the same industry. It's easy to find a company who has a large advertising budget and to overlook the little guys. I want to emphasize that when I buy locally, I still focus on quality of service, price, and every other factor. I guess my idea of "buy locally" should really be called "compare locally".
