physorg.com— University of Cincinnati (UC) physicians are using a new technique that involves injecting patients with millions of tiny radioactive glass beads to control advanced, inoperable liver cancer.

glass beads are marvelous little things!they are also useful for:* buing large islands (like manhattan) from Indians* making girls show their boobies at spring break
My hospital is one of the centers which uses these. The radioactivity decays rather rapidly. "Yttrium 90, a pure beta emitter, decays to stable zirconium 90 with a physical half-life of 64.2 hours (2.67 days). The average energy of the beta emissions from yttrium 90 is 0.9367 MeV."They never come out. They don't cure cancer though, they can slow it down. They only treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma is surgical resection or transplant.
I have prostate Cancer. I am undergoing Proton Radiation at Loma Linda Hospital. 21 done, 23 to go. Its a form of radiation that is as accurate as these beads. They claim a .5cm delivery accuracy for Proton Radiation, and nothing is left in the body when done. Google "Proton Therapy" if you ever get Cancer.
Actually there can be (and has been) leakage of a few beads. Causes localized damage where-ever they end up. Not usually life threatening because its only a few beads.
I worked at Theragenics Corporation in the late 80's where Therasphere was developed. The glass spheres are doped with Yttrium, then irradiated to get them to emit alpha particles, then administered as described in the article. The half life allowed it to cook the tumor then decay down pretty fast. (Lots of pâté de foie gras jokes.) It was awesome to be part of the development. The company also was developing TheraSeed, which treats prostate cancer. (Earlier comment noted.) TheraSeed approved first, and TheraSphere was pushed to the back, then dropped, so the company could focus on cash flow. I'm glad it's still being worked on - we never had a cure, at least with the protocol we were allowed to work at. We did show a definite palliative effect, and definitely extended expected life span.
