As a resident of the enchanted mitten state, and an avid reader of Great Lake maritime history ... these photos look genuine. The only question I'd propose would be as to the deep blue color of the rouge wave. The Great Lakes are known to present massive waves in less hostile weather due to their shallow depths compared to much deeper ocean depths. The old mariner's term for taking on 10' plus waves is "taking green waves" ... meaning the bulk of the wave is crossing the deck. This wave appears salt water blue, unlike the appearance of Great Lake fresh water. Though I could be wrong for I've never worked a fresh water hatch carrier. It is not uncommon for these newer big hatch cargo vessels to work from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes. Proof of this is all too well known by those who rely on Great Lakes fishery. Ocean going vessels empty their salt water ballast's into the lakes which have introduced many pesky organisms that harm the fresh water ecosystem. So, perhaps these are shots from different storms this particular vessel has encountered ... the blue wave shot being from the Atlantic or touched up for affect? Wherever they are, those guys in the aft section of the carrier were not having fun. I'm sure they had plenty of reading material and toilet paper in their bunk cabins. Just quick jog to the mess/galley for some pepto-bismol would entail going out on the aft-deck and would be a huge risk. Nothing like glancing up from your book to notice your port window to think, "niiiiiiice, we're under water again."

Oh, they exist alright, and thanks to remote sensing (i.e. satellites), we can prove it:http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMOKQL26WD_index_0.html
