Doesn't Google operate similar "homebrew" storage like this? Using consumer grade drives and h/w? Except that if one of their racks fail they just swap out the the complete unit?...

They finally fixed the firmware issue. I had 2 of them fail on me.

The backup resides with the customer. If there's a loss in transit data the web site simply pops up an error and tells the user to upload it again, sending it to a new location.

That was my first question too, but you know it's common and they have images of it around. Probably one machine they use to ghost the drives.

With dell there's a guy with the whole shebang at your door in less than 3 hours. 3 hours is a lifetime, but you have a backup anyway, right? RIGHT?
