There are plenty self-playing levels. They're called cutscenes, and *usually* you can tell that it is playing for you, but in some games, especially older 2d games, it isn't so obvious when the computer takes control. The Sonic games for Genesis (especially 3 and Sonic and Knuckles) come to mind.
