collegian.psu.edu — Yesterday afternoon, after 46 hours of a no-sleeping, no-sitting whirlwind of a weekend at the Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) overalls announced the practically incomprehensible total to be donated to the Four Diamonds Fund, an unprecedented record-breaking philanthropic total of money raised -- $5,240,385.17

If it's anything like the dance marathon at my university, then the atmosphere is quite easy to describe: hot and smelly.

I've been to Penn State a few times. Lovely campus, great academics and sports, and I am glad the money goes to cancer. But, seriously, you gotta stop with this back-slapping all around. Believe me, if the Greek System got no publicity out of this; there would be no donations of time or money from Greek or the alums who went through the fraternity system. It's as if these one time-one shot charity events are penance and absolution for the partying and wastes of time from Thursday night to Sunday morning, to the Sunday night visits to Hooters.

Why am I being dugg down? Is it really true that there are that many people who don't care about kids with no health insurance, while at the same time digging up all the "WOO PENN STATE RULES" posts to 20+?Wow. Maybe I should have gone to Penn State instead of the U of Penn. I must have gotten the names mixed up.

It's funny how easy it is to take shots at the stereotypical greek... funny but the biggest partiers I know aren't greek. Simply put it's Penn State, we're all drunks, so let's try not to make the distinction between a greek drunk and a non-greek drunk.THON takes less than 8% overhead (a large portion going directly to the BJC to rent the place), and care is not denied to anyone, insured or not. Period. I'll reiterate... NO FAMILY HAS EVER BEEN TURNED DOWN. Research before assuming, we're just students who raise money in our spare time,FTK

Ah, THON. When kids take a break from getting s***faced drunk on one weekend so that they can stand up for 48 hours, giving themselves various sorts of stress injuries, miss class a few days, etc., to raise some money for what even my cynicism can't deny is a good cause. I thought THON was a retarded way of doing fundraising when I was at Penn State, and I think it's a retarded way of doing fundraising now. How about instead of injuring themselves, these students actually tried doing useful things? Or is partying all that those Nitanny Lions are good at? (Hint: No, they're bad at that, too.)Now digg me down you degenerates!

Penn State proud class of 2005... this was my 6th THON, and as usual, I'm still pretty much speechless after such an amazing weekend. Still smiling! :)
